Saturday, January 24, 1998 Scripps reports increased fourth quarter cash
flow The E.W. Scripps Co., parent of the Abilene Reporter-News,
Friday reported increased cash flow of 15 percent for the fourth
quarter and 19 percent for 1997. When acquired and divested operations are excluded, those figures
are 4.5 percent and 15 percent. "Following a series of strategic acquisitions and divestitures
over the past year, Scripps has a tighter focus and greater opportunity
to build long-term value of shareholders," said William R.
Burleigh, president and CEO. "In the year ahead, we anticipate
continued growth at the newspapers, despite higher newsprint costs
in the early months." Burleigh said the company's television operations remain strong
and political advertising in 1998 should be a strong boost. Home
and Garden Television will become profitable in 1998, he said. Operating revenues for 1997 were $1.24 billion, up 10.7 percent
from 1996. Cash flow for the year was $328 million.
