Emmitt Smith misses workout with knee trouble

WICHITA FALLS (AP) - Running back Emmitt Smith gave the coaches a scare on Thursday when he turned up with slight swelling on his right knee.

An MRI did not show any major problems but Smith missed both practices as a precautionary measure.

"Emmitt developed a little fluid on the knee," said Dallas coach Chan Gailey. "We decided to play it smart and hold him out of practice. It's nothing major. The MRI showed everything was clean."

Chris Warren, obtained as a free agent out of Seattle, ran in Smith's No. 1 spot.

---- Beau Morgan Back for More Action

Beau Morgan has a dream of being an NFL running back some day.

For right now the Air Force second lieutenant is content to spend some of his vacation in the Dallas training camp for the second consecutive year.

Morgan, who played for the Air Force Academy, is staioned at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs. He is on leave until Aug. 12.

In the spring, he plans to petition for his release from active duty.

Morgan was a quarterback in college but shows nice moves as a running back.

"I'm lucky to have this chance and I plan to make the most of it," Morgan said. "The Air Force is my job right now but playing in the NFL is my dream."

---- Deion When Will You Play Again?"

Deion Sanders' 1998 camp debut is close.

Sanders had his left ankle scoped in May and is close to 100 per cent.

"We don't want him to aggravate something," said coach Chan Gailey. "There is no need to rush it. We hope to get him in there sometime this week."

Meanwhile, Sanders is living in style.

He has a $30,000 customized golf cart and a $300,000 air-conditioned bus on the Midwestern State University campus.

---- Ellis Returns

Top draft pick Greg Ellis returned to practice after missing two sessions with back spasms.

Defensive end Ellis went through two practices without problems in the 106-degree heat.

"Ellis seems OK now," Gailey said.
