Former Dallas policeman released in murder-Irvin-for-hire case

DALLAS (AP) -- A former Dallas policeman was paroled Tuesday, two years after being sentenced in a murder-for-hire plot against Dallas Cowboys player Michael Irvin.

Johnnie Hernandez, released in Huntsville, pleaded guilty in August 1996 to solicitation of capital murder and an unrelated bribery charge. He was sentenced to serve two concurrent six-year prison terms.

Prosecutors said Hernandez wanted Irvin killed because the ex-officer believed the player threatened his girlfriend, dancer Rachelle Smith.

She was a witness in a 1996 case in which Irvin pleaded no contest to cocaine possession.
