George Seifert has deal with 49ers until 2000
By Clark Judge / Knight-Ridder Newspapers
SAN JOSE -- Former Coach George Seifert is under contract
to the 49ers, president Carmen Policy revealed, through 2000
as a consultant. The contract -- believed to be about $200,000
annually -- was negotiated, Policy said, when Seifert left a
year ago as head coach. It is not binding, and Seifert -- whose
contract as a coach expires early this year -- can sign with
a team of his choice.
Asked if he could envision Seifert coaching the Dallas Cowboys,
Policy winced.
"I think George Seifert has earned the right and stature
to become a head coach that has the autonomy and support necessary
to coach a team without outside and inside interference. If it
can be accomplished at a facility such as Dallas, then I wouldn't
blame him. But I think George would want to be hired on his own
terms."
Asked if he could envision Seifert coaching the Raiders, Policy
winced again.
"If he did that," Policy said, "we would not
only be done with him contractually, we would consider snipping
the umbilical cord altogether."
