Cowboys running back reaching out to children

WACO, Texas (AP) -- Dallas Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith could be confused with a rock star these days.

Smith has been part of a traveling roadshow called "Go For It," sponsored by Healthsouth.

At the Heart O' Texas Coliseum in Waco on Wednesday morning, Smith promoted good health, saying no to drugs and a positive lifestyle before nearly 7,000 screaming elementary students from across Central Texas.

"This is a serious message," said Smith after the 90-minute show complete with lazer lights and ear-splitting music that made it appear to be a rock and roll concert.

Oakland Raiders cornerback Larry Brown, former Dallas and New York linebacker Steve DeOssie, New England Patriots' Scooter McGruder and Olympic gold medalist Jennifer Chandler appeared along with Smith.

"I can reach more students in one arena like this than going to 20 school districts over the course of a year," Smith said. "I don't consider this serious work. It's so much fun. The big winners are really the kids. The message is always the same: believe in yourself, do right, eat properly, go to school and you have a great chance to be a success."
