Stoutmire, Davis to start for Cowboys

IRVING (AP) - The Dallas Cowboys named starters at two key positions Saturday and cut seven players to reach the NFL limit of 53.

Coach Chan Gailey said Omar Stoutmire will start at free safety, beating out George Teague and Kenny Wheaton.

"He earned it," Gailey said of Stoutmire, who had five first-half tackles, three unassisted, in the last exhibition game Thursday night.

Gailey also named Billy Davis as the starter at the second wide receiver spot when the Cowboys open the season against Arizona on Sept. 6. Gailey said, however, that veteran Ernie Mills would also play.

Among the seven players cut were rookie quarterback Danny Gonzalez, who got off to a fast start in training camp but faded.

Also cut were cornerbacks Zebbie Lethridge and Terrell Sutton, linebacker James Bates, defensive end Denny Fortney, fullback David McCann and defensive end Brett Williams.
