Cowboys work on terminology

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Some 50 players showed up on Tuesday for a workout under new Dallas coach Chan Gailey for some vocabulary lessons from the former Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator.

"We worked on getting our terminology down," said wide receiver Michael Irvin. "We need to have it down before we get to training camp."

Coaches have their own slang terms for plays, positions and the like.

The NFL draft is April 18-19 and the Cowboys will be selecting from the eighth position. Their needs are many, including a rush tight end, linebacking, and offensive linemen.

No reporters were allowed to view the brief workout.

"The coaching staff wants to get their new system down in a relaxed situation without spectators around," said Cowboys spokesman Doug Hood.

The Cowboys don't hold their first minicamp at Valley Ranch until Friday, April 24. They will have a veterans minicamp on May 5.

Training camp, which has been moved from Austin to Wichita Falls, begins sometime in mid-July.
