Report: Patriots to hire Cowboys assistant
to run offense
FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) - The New England Patriots were set to
name Dallas Cowboys' assistant Ernie Zampese as the team's new
offensive coordinator, according to reports today.
The announcement would be made by Patriots coach Pete Carroll
at an afternoon news conference, WBZ Radio and CNNSI reported
today.
The Patriots would neither confirm nor deny the report.
Zampese, the Cowboys' offensive coordinator since 1994, would
replace Larry Kennan, who was expected to be offered another
post with the team, the station reported.
New England's offense struggled during the later stages of
the 1997 season. In the team's final playoff game, it managed
only two field goals in a 7-to-6 loss to Pittsburgh.
Zampese, 62, has said he expected to be replaced as the Cowboys'
coordinator despite having one year left on his contract.
Even though Dallas owner Jerry Jones has yet to name a new
head coach to replace Barry Switzer, published reports have indicated
that the team plans to sign former Minnesota Vikings' offensive
coordinator Brian Billick to replace Zampese.
