Commissioners OK new signs for Expo Center
Taylor County commissioners approved spending $14,883 Tuesday
on new signs for the improving Expo Center.
The blue-and-white signs will be raised before the West Texas
Fair and Rodeo in September and will label each of the buildings
and facilities at the Expo complex. Mounted maps will also help
visitors find their way.
The winning bid was more than $5,000 below the budgeted expense.
Also Tuesday, commissioners formalized a request to the state
comptroller to receive unclaimed funds from rural electric cooperatives
that can't find customers who are owed rebates.
State law allows local governments to use the funds to stimulate
minority- or women-owned businesses. Though Taylor County boasts
no such program, it transfers the funds to the city of Abilene,
which administers a Minority/Women Business Enterprises Program.
The county received $1,300 in unclaimed co-op funds in 1996
and expects to get about the same amount this year. County Treasurer
Laura Browder reported the city plans to use the money to advertise
small business loans available to women and minority entrepreneurs.
