Jailer saves inmate from hanging in Sweetwater
By DON KING
Correspondent
SWEETWATER - A Nolan County jailer has been credited with saving
the life of a 38-year-old inmate who attempted to hang himself
Sunday.
Jailer Kevin Watson was conducting video surveillance of jail
cells about 1 p.m. when he saw the inmate hanging from a bed sheet.
"We had placed the inmate under observation after he was
classified as a risk, and Watson qualifies for hero status for
spotting the problem and getting to him quick," said Nolan
County Sheriff Donnie Rannefeld.
The unidentified inmate was unconscious and not breathing when
discovered. The inmate had regained consciousness by the time
he arrived at the emergency room of Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital,
medical personnel said.
The inmate was treated and released and was back in a jail
cell within three hours of his suicide attempt.
Rannefeld said the inmate had recently been returned to custody
to face parole violation charges.
