Abilene IRS office to offer permanent walk-in
assistance
By BETH HALLMARK Staff Writer
Back by popular demand, walk-in taxpayer assistance at Abilene's
Internal Revenue Service office will now be a permanent feature.
The IRS in March announced it would offer walk-in help for
the remainder of the tax season, after the service had been nonexistent
for years. At the time, IRS officials said they would later consider
keeping the office open after April 15.
This week, the IRS announced the office's walk-in assistance
will be available on a permanent basis. Taxpayers can receive
help with all phases of examination and collection problems as
well as general questions, IRS officials said.
Regular hours will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through
Friday. The office is located on the second floor of the federal
building at 341 Pine St.
Taxpayer problem-solving days also will be held on the first
Thursday of every month starting in May. Hours will be from 8
a.m. to 6 p.m. by appointment.
For more information call Frank Ward at 676-5700. Those wishing
to make an appointment for a problem-solving day should call the
office's secretary at 676-5711 during business hours.
Though the office has remained staffed over the years, walk-in
taxpayer assistance was discontinued for several years because
of budgetary constraints. Tax forms were available in shelves
outside the office, while the examination clerks remained behind
locked doors, available by appointment only.
