General orders temporary stand-down
By BETH HALLMARK / Abilene Reporter-News
The skies were quieter than usual over Abilene on Thursday
as Dyess Air Force Base's top official temporarily halted all
B-1 bomber flights in response to a B-1B crash the day before.
Dyess commander Brig. Gen. Mike McMahan ordered the temporary
stand-down so officials could brief base personnel on Wednesday's
accident. The down time also will be used to review operational
and safety procedures.
McMahan said the stand-down could end as early as today. "We'll
be back in the air very soon," he said, "once we're
able to determine there were no local factors, and we've had a
good debriefing."
Dyess personnel also will be busy collecting the records and
background information the Air Force's investigative team will
need to determine why a Dyess B-1B crashed into a Kentucky field.
"We need to make sure we have supported this safety board
to the maximum extent," he said, "and then we'll go
back to local training."
The stand-down affects Dyess operations only and does not involve
the base's C-130 transport plane operations.
