Retired Staff Sgt. Mark Steven Lund

Retired U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Mark Steven Lund, 46, died Wednesday at his home.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday in Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 U.S. Hwy 277 South, with Chaplain Capt. Dan Zulli officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Lund was born in Hopkins, Minn., and was in the Air Force for 20 years. He moved to Abilene in 1991 from New Mexico. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and was the widower of Sandra Lee Schug Lund, whom he married in 1974 in Hopkins, Minn.

Survivors include one son, Brandon Lee Lund of Abilene; his mother, Marilyn Lund of Minnesota; one brother, Wayne Lund of Minnesota; and one sister, Vicky Lund of Minnesota.

Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Monday in the funeral home.

Bobby Gene McCarty

Bobby Gene McCarty, 67, died Saturday in a Big Spring hospital.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Hawley Cemetery with Bill Proctor officiating, directed by North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange.

Mr. McCarty grew up in Hawley and served with the U.S. Army in the Korean conflict. He worked for Pride Refinery for more than 15 years and Powers Pump Co. for more than 10 years. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include a companion, Cathryn Carter of Hawley; two sons, Bobby L. McCarty and Ronnie McCarty, both of Abilene; one daughter, Pamela Myers of Abilene; one brother, Bill McCarty of Hawley; one sister, Inez Bishop of Abilene; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Retired Senior Master Sgt. Ralph Huffman

Retired U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Ralph H. Huffman, 80, died Thursday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Caps Baptist Church with the Rev. Donald Valenta officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 U.S. Hwy 277 South.

Mr. Huffman was born in Game, Ky., and was in the Air Force for 30 years. He worked for the Internal Revenue Service. He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Non-Commissioned Officers Association, Air Force Sergeants Association and Caps Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Marie D. Huffman of Abilene; two sons, Gary N. Huffman of Van Nuys, Calif., and Marcus B. Huffman of Simpsonville, S.C.; two daughters, Heleana M. Harvey of Blanding, Utah, and Debera J. Huffman-Harris of Abilene; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

Dr. William Anthony Hunt

Dr. William Anthony Hunt, 91, died Thursday in a local nursing home.

A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday in St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Archie Echols officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Dr. Hunt, son of McMurry University founder Dr. J.W. Hunt, was born in Dumas. He graduated from McMurry College Academy in 1925, McMurry College in 1929 and Southern Methodist University in 1933. He earned a doctorate's degree in 1953 from the University of Texas. He was a high school teacher and athletic coach, elementary principal and summer class instructor at McMurry. He also was a deputy state superintendent of education for the Texas State Department of Education. He was president of Howard County Junior College in Big Spring from 1952 until retiring in 1972. Upon retirement, he was named president emeritus of the junior college. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from McMurry in 1959 and was a past president of the Texas Retired Teachers Association.

He was a member of the 1927 football team at McMurry that won the school's first Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association football championship and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Honor in 1986. He also was named a McMurry Distinguished Alumnus in 1992. He is listed in Who's Who in American Education and was a past vice president of the Texas Public Junior College Association. He was a past president of the Downtown Lions Club, Salvation Army and YMCA, all in Big Spring; and was a member of the Big Spring Greater Business Foundation and Abilene Downtown Lions Club. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a Shriner. He was a past member of the administrative board and also a Sunday school teacher at St. Paul United Methodist Church and was the widower of Pauline "Polly" Kendrick Hunt, whom he married in 1929.

Survivors include one son, James Frank Hunt of Graham; one sister, Margaret Jones of Abilene; three grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3-4 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Polly Latham

EASTLAND -- Notre Pauline Latham, 82, died Friday in a Dallas hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Eastland First Baptist Church with Drs. Tom Goodman and Mike Evans officiating. Burial will be in Eastland City Cemetery, directed by Edwards Funeral Home.

Mrs. Latham was born in Moran and grew up in Bluff Branch in Eastland County. She moved to Eastland more than 55 years ago and worked at Hollywood Vassarette Co., a tax office and in home health care. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was the widow of Robert Homer Latham, whom she married in 1932.

Survivors include four children, Robert B. Latham of Lake Leon, Pauline Clements of Eastland, Sylvia Slatton of Abilene and Victor Latham of Cisco; one sister, Loretta Latham of Cisco; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Christian

LITTLEFIELD -- Dorothy Christian, 84, of Austin and formerly of Abilene and Littlefield, died Thursday in an Austin hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Littlefield First Baptist Church with Dr. Steve Buckland officiating. Burial will be in Littlefield Memorial Park, directed by Hammons Funeral Home.

Mrs. Christian was born in Chillicothe and graduated from Abilene High School in 1932. She attended Hardin-Simmons University and was a homemaker. She lived in Littlefield for more than 50 years ago. She was a member of Littlefield First Baptist Church and was the widow of Jack Christian, whom she married in 1936 in Abilene.

Survivors include two daughters, Judy Haralson of Austin and Jan Trotter of Macon, Ga.; one sister, Jewell Hall of Austin; two brothers, Dub Wofford of Abilene and Louis Wofford of Stephenville; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

C.E. 'Kil' Kilpatrick

BALLINGER -- C.E. "Kil' Kilpatrick, 77, died Friday in a local nursing home.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday in Seventh Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Tony King officiating. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. in Admiral Cemetery, directed by Rains-Seale Funeral Home.

Mr. Kilpatrick was born in Paradise and served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He married Goldia Mae Jones in 1945 in Abilene and was a retired auto mechanic. He was a member of Seventh Street Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Ballinger; three daughters, Jolene McBurney of Abilene, and Louise Kelly and Robin Burgess, both of Ballinger; two brothers, Billy Gene Kilpatrick of Abilene and W.C. Kilpatrick Jr. of San Angelo; three sisters, Gladys Chittum and Quida Snow, both of Abilene, and Ruth Graham of San Angelo; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Admiral Cemetery Association, c/o First National Bank, Baird 79504; or a favorite charity.

Richard Dale Green

LAKE JACKSON -- Richard Dale Green, 54, relative of four Big Country residents, died Friday in a Texas City hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Lakewood Funeral Chapel with Curt Gunz officiating. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Sylvester Cemetery.

Mr. Green was born in Roby and moved to the Lake Jackson area in 1969. He worked for Dow Chemical for 30 years.

Survivors include a companion, Jeanette Sciba of Lake Jackson; three daughters, Amanda Bird of Round Rock, Stephanie Stevens of San Antonio and Julie Knies of Lake Jackson; his parents, Richard and June Green of Anson; three sisters, Louise Woodruff of Anson, Janice Fitzsimmons of Victoria and Gale Ohlhausen of Abilene; and six grandchildren.

Willie Jean Jones

SWEETWATER -- Willie Jean Jones, 59, founder of the Sweetwater Black History Association, died Friday from injuries received in an automobile accident on Interstate 20 near Sweetwater.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Sweetwater First United Methodist Church with the Revs. James Callaway Jr. and Roy C. Jones officiating. Burial will be in Roscoe Cemetery, directed by McCoy Funeral Home.

Mrs. Jones was born in Cameron and moved to West Texas at an early age. She attended Booker T. Washington School and moved away from the Sweetwater area in 1955. She returned to Sweetwater in 1975 and worked for People for Progress Inc. from 1977 until retiring in 1991. She was a teacher's aide, cook for the Senior Nutrition Program, director of the Food Cooperative and secretary of the Texas Association of Community Action Agencies. Upon retiring, she volunteered for People for Progress as an aide for the Adult Basic Education Program and Stage Transportation Program. She also was a volunteer wardrobe mistress for the Amarillo Globe Co. and served on Amarillo's community advisory committee to promote the arts to the African-American community. She was honored in 1994 for her work with the fine arts with the Golden Nail Award from the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce and Amarillo Art Committee. At the time of her death, she was coordinating the Black History Month celebration in Sweetwater. She was a member of Mount Rose Baptist Church and was the widow of Robert Jones, whom she married in 1954 in Roscoe.

Survivors include five daughters, Myrtle Faye Jones and Yolonda Renee Jones, both of Dallas, Shelia Louise Jackson of Sweetwater, and Fannie Blalock and Betty Robertson, both of Odessa; seven sons, Terry Wayne Callaway of Dallas, Sammy Lee Jones of Oklahoma, Lionel Dewayne Jones of Hunting, W.Va., Maurice Marshall of Sweetwater, B.W. Wilson of Killeen, and Joe Alexander and Michael Alexander, both of Paris, Texas; three brothers, Isaiah Callaway of Odessa, the Rev. James Callaway Jr. of Marina, Calif., and Howard Callaway of Houston; four sisters, Margaret Callaway, Effie Callaway, Myrtle Callaway and Betty Callaway, all of Dallas; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.

Jacqueline 'Jackie' Findley

BROWNWOOD -- Jacqueline "Jackie" Findley, 79, died Saturday in a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Greenleaf Cemetery with the Rev. Clark Ford officiating, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Ms. Findley was born in Comanche and lived in Brownwood most of her life. She worked as a bookkeeper and tax preparer and was a member of First Christian Church.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews.

Loretta Portwood Bowers

STAMFORD -- Loretta Portwood Bowers, 80, died Friday in an Abilene hospital.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Highland Memorial Cemetery with Chad Massie officiating, directed by Kinney Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bowers was born in Sherman and was a charter member of the Stamford V.I.P. Center. She also was a member of Chapter 269, Order of the Eastern Star; and Orient Street Church of Christ. She was the widow of Earl Portwood, whom she married in 1936 in Stamford; and J.B. Bowers, whom she married in 1970.

Survivors include one son, Jerry Portwood of Slaton; one daughter, Linda Turner of Ira; one sister, Mrs. Morris Bailey of Fort Worth; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

David Everett 'Dock' Pinegar

WINTERS -- David Everett "Dock" Pinegar, 89, died Friday in an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Winters Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Charles Myers officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Mr. Pinegar was born in Lone Oak and moved to Pumphrey in 1916. He married Fay Mitchell in 1934 in Winters and then moved to the Winters area. He was a farmer and was a member of Wingate Baptist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Addie Teter of Tulsa, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Nell Estes

RULE -- Nell Estes, 82, bookkeeper at Bailey Toliver Chevrolet in Haskell for 20 years, died Saturday in an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Rule First Baptist Church with the Rev. Scott Hensley officiating. Burial will be in Rule Cemetery, directed by McCauley-Robison Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Estes was born in Spur and was a member of the Philadelphian Club, Bridge Club and 84 Club. She also was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She taught Sunday school at First Baptist Church for many years and was the widow of John Romaine Estes, whom she married in 1937.

Survivors include two daughters, Rita Beck of Lubbock and Jackie Butler of Irving; one sister, Forrestine Ripple of Dumas; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.

Larry Callison

EASTLAND -- Larry Callison, 38, of Aransas Pass and formerly of Eastland, died Friday in a Corpus Christi hospital. Services are pending with Higginbotham Funeral Home of Gorman.

Edgar Lewis Warren

SWEETWATER -- Edgar Lewis Warren, 83, died Saturday in a local retirement center. Services are pending with McCoy Funeral Home.

Sylvester Ozuna

HASKELL -- Sylvester Ozuna, 86, died Saturday in a local nursing home. Services are pending with Holden-McCauley Funeral Directors.

Euma Lee Buckley

SWEETWATER -- Euma Lee Buckley, 95, of Dallas and formerly of Sweetwater, died Saturday at her daughter's home in Dallas. Services are pending with McCoy Funeral Home.

BIG SPRING -- Opal Gaskins, 71, died Saturday in a local nursing home. Services are pending with Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

ROWENA -- Emma Fuchs, 86, died Friday. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in the church, directed by Rains-Seale Funeral Home of Ballinger.
