Jasper Lewis 'Slick' McCaleb
Jasper Lewis "Slick" McCaleb, 80, died Wednesday
in a local nursing home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Pioneer Drive Baptist
Church with the Rev. Jack Ridlehoover and Dr. Jeff Reid officiating.
Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Elliott-Hamil
Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
A retired salesman from Battles Home Improvement, Mr. McCaleb
was active with Little League, Boy Scouts, Kiwanis Club and Rotary
Club. He also served as deacon of Pioneer Drive Baptist.
A Big Country product, Mr. McCaleb was born in Merkel, grew
up in Hodges and graduated from high school in Anson. At Hardin-Simmons
University, he played basketball, baseball and football and baseball,
and was listed in Who's Who of American Universities and Colleges,.
He served as student body president in his final semester before
graduating in 1941. That same year, he married Betty Wallace in
Abilene.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Michael Lewis McCaleb
of Irving; two daughters, Patricia "Cissy" Broussard
of Kerrville and Molly Lenker of Abilene; eight grandchildren;
four great-grandchildren; three nieces and several cousins.
Memorials may be sent to a favorite charity, Sears Methodist
Center, 3233 S. Willis, or Pioneer Drive Baptist, 701 S. Pioneer.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. at the McCaleb home, 2049
Brentwood.
Ovelia Sievers
Ovelia Sievers, 81, died Wednesday at home.
Her body will be cremated.
Ms. Sievers worked as a proofreader at the Abilene Reporter-News
from 1977-82 and was a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses. She
was born in Louisiana and moved to Abilene in 1950.
Survivors include one daughter, Thelma Sargee of Abilene; one
son, Leroy Sievers of Tomball; one sister, Norma Phillips of Liberty;
15 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Raymond Allen Landis
Raymond Allen Landis, 51, died Wednesday in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Abilene City
Cemetery with Randy Avery officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil
Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mr. Landis, a retired disc jockey with WMBD in Illinois, moved
to Abilene six years ago. He was born in Peoria, Ill., where he
attended high school and college. He was a member of the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Survivors include two brothers, Otis Landis of California and
Don Landis of Peoria.
Dale Nolen
Dale L. Nolen, 63, died Tuesday at home.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Bible Chapel with Quanah
Jobe officiating. Burial will be in Sweetwater City Cemetery,
directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mr. Nolen was born in Brownfield and moved to Abilene in 1988
from Eunice, N.M.
Survivors include one brother, Robert Nolen of Electra, and
other relatives.
Memorials may be sent to Bible Chapel, 5158 Twilight.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Yvonne Rodriguez Wilson
Yvonne Rodriguez Wilson, 27, formerly of Abilene, died Sunday
in Granbury.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Vincent Catholic
Church with the Rev. Joe Uecker officiating. Burial will be in
City Cemetery, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Ms. Wilson attended high school and lived in Abilene most of
her life before moving to the Granbury area in 1988.
Survivors include two daughters, Tamika Wilson and Dusty Wilson,
both of Granbury; her father and stepmother, Carlos and Lydia
Rodriguez of Abilene; her mother, Carmen Rodriguez of Abilene;
three brothers, Carlos Rodriguez Jr. of Rosharon, Joe Rudy Rodriguez
and Steven Rodriguez, both of Abilene; two stepbrothers, Reuben
Morales of Del Rio and Jerry L. Morales of Abilene; three sisters,
Melissa Rodriguez, Lisa Herrera and Lucinda Rodriguez, all of
Abilene; one stepsister, Jeannette Foster of Abilene; three grandparents,
Joe and Jessie Rodriguez and Bertha Rodriguez, all of Abilene
and one great-grandmother, Josephina Munoz of Abilene.

Jack Vaught
COMANCHE -- Jack Vaught, 88, died Tuesday in a Brownwood hospital.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. today in Eastland Memorial
Cemetery with Dr. Van Christian officiating, directed by Hall
& Sons Funeral Home.
Mr. Vaught co-founded Texas Peanut Company in Comanche in 1945
and later worked for the Federal Power Commission in Washington,
D.C. After retiring in 1978, he returned to Comanche, where he
was a member of First Baptist Church.
Born in the Duster community of Comanche County in 1910, Mr.
Vaught graduated from Eastland High School and attended the University
of Texas in Austin. He married Exma Miller of Eastland in 1932,
and the couple resided in Comanche until 1997, when they moved
to Redstone Park Retirement Center in Brownwood.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Jan Sellers of Dallas;
one son, Jack Vaught of Austin; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to First Baptist Church.
Nunley Farrar
ANSON -- Nunley Farrar, 88, died Tuesday in an Abilene hospital.
Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Prairie View Baptist Church
with the Rev. Jerry Pittman officiating. Burial will be in Prairie
View Cemetery, directed by Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home.
A retired truck driver, Mr. Farrar served in the Navy during
World War II and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars. He
was born in Van Zandt County but lived Jones County most of his
life, and married Erma Dell Davis in Anson in 1943. He was a Baptist.
Survivors include three sons, Garron Farrar of El Campo, Gregg
Farrar of Abilene and Roy Farrar of Memphis, Tenn.; three daughters,
Sue Nichols, Sharron Herring and Laura Farrar, all of Anson; 21
grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
Anton Freytag
SWEETWATER -- Anton Freytag, 87, died Tuesday in an Abilene
hospital.
Rosary will be at 8 p.m. today in Immaculate Heart of Mary
Catholic Church and services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Immaculate
Heart with the Rev. Mike Goode officiating. Burial will be in
St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Moulton, directed by McCoy Funeral
Home.
Mr. Freytag was born in Moulton in 1910 and married Martha
Pilsner there in 1937. He farmed in the Inadale community and
was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Sweetwater; two sons, Jimmy
L. Freytag of Ardmore, Okla., and Tommy L. Freytag of Gilbert,
Ariz.; two daughters, Barbara J. Harvel of Little Rock, Ark.,
and Dorothy A. McKenzie of Abilene; one sister, Marie Appelt of
Pasadena; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be sent to a favorite charity or to Alzheimers
Association.
Carl Joe Powell
ROTAN -- Carl Joe Powell, 56, died Tuesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Weathersbee Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. George Ferguson officiating. Burial
will be in Belvieu Cemetery.
Mr. Powell, a lifelong resident of Rotan, was a retired mechanic
at National Gypsum Company and a member of Little Zion Baptist
Church. He was born in Rotan and married Sandra Wynn in Anson
in 1976.
Survivors include his wife, of Rotan; one son, Carl Joe Powell
Jr. of Abilene; one daughter, Denise Thompson of Abilene; his
mother, Pearl Powell Price of Rotan; five sisters, Billy Newsome
of Ontario, Cleo Patrick Donaldson of Columbia, N.C., Bobby Black
of Oceanside, Calif., Linda McClain and Judy Jones, both of Abilene;
three brothers, Eugene Powell Jr. of Hamlin, Douglas Powell Sr.
of Abilene and Donald Powell of Rotan; and two grandchildren.
Gene Lloyd Cox
SNYDER -- Gene Lloyd Cox, 61, died Monday at home.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Snyder Cemetery
with Wayne Horton officiating, directed by Wright Colonial Funeral
Home.
Mr. Cox was born in Wilson, Okla., and married Dorotha Joe
Clark in Lubbock in 1965. He served in the Air Force and was a
truck driver for the Texas Department of Corrections.
Survivors include two sons, Robert Bruce of Lubbock and Clark
Wayne Cox; one daughter, Cynthia Smith of Nacogdoches; and four
grandchildren.
Ricarda Carrion
SWEETWATER -- Ricarda Carrion, 90, died Tuesday in a local
hospital.
Rosary will be at 7 p.m. today in McCoy Funeral Home Chapel
and services will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Immaculate Heart of Mary
Catholic Church with the Rev. Tim Guthridge officiating. Burial
will be in Sweetwater Cemetery.
Mrs. Carrion was born in 1908 and was the widow of Joe Carrion.
She was a member of Immaculate Heart.
Survivors include two daughters, Erlinda Gutierrez of Tahoka
and Vera Cantu of Sweetwater; two sons, Rogerio Carrion of Rotan
and Roy Carrion of Stephenville; and 24 grandchildren.
Elton Wallace
BIG SPRING -- Elton Wallace, 67, died Wednesday in a local
hospital. Services are pending with Myers and Smith Funeral Home.
John Freeman
CLYDE -- John Smith Freeman, 107, died Wednesday in an Abilene
hospital. Services are pending with Bailey Funeral Home.
Cecil Pinson
SAN ANGELO -- Cecil Edwin Pinson, 68, died Wednesday in a San
Angelo hospital. Services are pending with Heartland Funeral Home
of Early.
Eldon Jones
BROWNWOOD -- Eldon M. "Bill" Jones, 74, died Wednesday.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Davis-Morris Funeral Home
Chapel.
