Today's Obituaries (July 3, 1998)

T.A. Higgins

T.A. Higgins, 70, died Tuesday in a local nursing home.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Albany Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Ritter officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Mr. Higgins was born in Stamford and grew up in Kermit. He served with the U.S. Navy and married Helen Lipstraw in 1954 in Albany. He worked as an oilfield roustabout and moved to Wink in 1976, Stephenville in 1986 and Abilene in 1996. He was a member of Tye Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; one son, Matthew Higgins of Abilene; one daughter, Lucretia Morales of Seminole; one brother, Edgar Burge of Aspermont; two sisters, Sybil Robinson of Bellville and Velva Marie Keeney of Abilene; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Elna Adams

COLORADO CITY - Elna Adams, 90, lifelong Mitchell County resident, died Wednesday in a Baird nursing home.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Colorado City Cemetery with Truman Bodine officiating, directed by Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.

Mrs. Adams was born in Mitchell County and attended school in Colorado City. She was a homemaker. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was the widow of John E. Adams, whom she married in 1925 in Colorado City.

Survivors include one daughter, Elizabeth Shields of Abilene; one son, John T. Adams of Cross Plains; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Marjorie Allen Houston

BROWNWOOD - Marjorie Allen Houston, 82, died Saturday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Mount Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Kelvin Kelley and Aaron Blake officiating. Burial will be in Greenleaf Cemetery, directed by Gregory Spencer Funeral Directors of Fort Worth, Branford-Dawson Funeral Home of Temple and Heartland Funeral Home of Early.

Mrs. Houston was born in Brownwood, where she lived most of her life, and was a retired school teacher. She was a member of Mount Zion Baptist Church and was the widow of Bennie Houston Sr., whom she married in 1937 in Austin.

Survivors include three sons, Melvin L. Houston of Lubbock, Allen P. Houston Sr. of Dallas and Cecil H. Houston of Swainsboro, Ga.; one daughter, Adella Houston Kirk of Brownwood; one stepdaughter, Clara Houston Gray of Houston; 32 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; one nephew and one niece; and two cousins.

Visitation will be from 7-8:30 p.m. today in Heartland Funeral Home.

Ruth McVay

Ruth E. McVay, 77, died Thursday in a local nursing home. Services are pending with North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange.

James Mauldin

James R. Mauldin, of Buffalo Gap, died Thursday at his home. Services are pending with Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Carol Burnett

SWEETWATER - Carol W. Burnett, 54, died Thursday in Fisher County. Services are pending with Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Esther Leora Tarpley

DE LEON - Esther Leora Tarpley, 91, died Thursday in Merkel. Services will be at 4 p.m. Sunday in Northside Baptist Church, directed by Nowlin Funeral Home.

Oma Dewbre Carter

RISING STAR - Oma Dewbre Carter, 88, died Monday in a Brownwood hospital. Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel.
