Today's Obituaries (July 11, 1998)

Helen Lorene Browder

HOLLIS, Okla. - Helen Lorene Browder, 82, of Abilene and formerly of Hollis, died Wednesday at her home.

Services will be at 1 p.m. today in Gould Church of Christ in Gould, Okla., directed by Stewart Funeral Service.

Mrs. Browder was born in Van Alstyne and graduated from Davidson High School in Davidson, Okla. She married Robert Carroll Browder in 1948 and was a homemaker. She worked for J.C. Penney Co. in Hollis, and lived in Cordell, Okla., and for more than 50 years, Harmon County in Oklahoma. She moved to Abilene in 1995 from McQueen, Okla., and was a member of Self Culture Club. She taught children's Bible classes at Gould Church of Christ in Gould, Okla.

Survivors include one daughter, Marsha Monroe of Beaumont; two sons, Terry Browder of Abilene and Jerry Browder of Denton; one sister, Dorothy Wall of Stephenville; seven grandchildren; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Curtis Alvey

COLEMAN - Curtis W. Alvey, 86, superintendent at Martin Brick Plant for many years, died Thursday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. today in Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Charles Sheffield and the Rev. James Posey officiating. Burial will be in Coleman Cemetery.

Mr. Alvey was born in Abilene and moved to Coleman at age 8 from Rockwall. He was a member of Concho Baptist Church and was the widower of Helen Gentry Alvey, whom he married in 1936 in Coleman County.

Survivors include three sons, Curtis Leon Alvey of San Angelo, Eugene Alvey of San Antonio and Ronald Alvey of Hurst; one daughter, Dianah Herrera of Angel Fire, N.M.; one brother, Ivan Howard Alvey of Coleman; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to Hospice of the Big Country, 3113 Oldham Lane, Abilene 79602; or Coleman Senior Citizens Center, 301 S. Pecos, Coleman 76834.

Dan Gorman

KERRVILLE - Dan L. Gorman, 71, formerly of San Angelo, brother of two Big Country residents, died Thursday in a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens in San Angelo with Paul Shero officiating, directed by Johnson's Funeral Home of San Angelo.

Mr. Gorman was born in Goldsboro and grew up in Baird. He owned and operated a sheet metal and air conditioning business and also formerly lived in Big Spring and Zephyr. He was a member of First Christian Church and was the widower of Dorothy Jean Donalson Gorman.

Survivors include five brothers, J.D. Gorman of Spokane, Wash., John Gorman of Dallas, his twin, Don Gorman of San Angelo, Sam Gorman of Abilene and Bill Gorman of Baird; and many nieces and nephews.

Dorothy Kesler Theis

COLORADO CITY - Dorothy Kesler Theis, 87, died Thursday at her home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Colorado City First Baptist Church with Dr. Ted Spear officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Rosedale Cemetery in Sour Lake, directed by Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.

Mrs. Theis was born in Tangier, Ind., and was a homemaker. She moved to Mitchell County in 1966. She was a member of First Baptist Church and was the widow of Ronald Fredrick Theis, whom she married in 1931 in De Ridder, La.

Survivors include one daughter, Fredine Ward of Colorado City; three sons, John Theis of Glen Rose, Elray Theis of Longview and Curtis Theis of White Oak; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

H.L. Gray

ZEPHYR - H.L. Gray, 86, formerly of Eastland County, died Thursday at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Chambers-Wilcox Funeral Directors Chapel in Cisco with Kirk Parsons officiating. Burial will be in Eastland City Cemetery.

Mr. Gray was born in Grapevine and attended school in Eastland County. He married Billie Hatfield in 1947 in Eastland and worked in the oil field for Hughes Tool Co. He farmed in Romney, south of Cisco, and moved to Zephyr several years ago.

Survivors include his wife, of Zephyr; one daughter, Johnnie Gray of Zephyr; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

William Curtis

William T. Curtis, 77, died Friday in a local hospital. Services are pending with Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South.

Marilyn Hodnett

BIG SPRING - Marilyn (Mrs. Y.B.) Hodnett, 66, died Friday in a local hospital. Services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Lloyd Steakley

OPLIN - Lloyd Steakley, 74, died Friday at his home. Services are pending with Bailey Funeral Home of Clyde.

Willie Wheeler Rogers

SNYDER - Willie Wheeler Rogers, 81, died Thursday at his home after a sudden illness. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel.

Sister Mary Paula Neita Harkins

ANSON - Sister Mary Paula Neita Harkins, 80, died July 1 in Colorado Springs, Colo. The body was cremated. Burial will be at 1 p.m. today in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home.
