Alta Young Hartshorn
Alta Young Hartshorn, 94, died Tuesday in a local nursing home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in St. Paul United Methodist
Church with the Rev. Kathryn Boren and Dr. David Hamblin officiating.
Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Elliott-Hamil
Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Mrs. Hartshorn was born in Kuttawa, Ky., and attended school
in Kuttawa, Ky., and Cairo, Ill. She worked for 12 years for Illinois
Bell Telephone Co. before moving to Texas in 1960. She was a housemother
at Shannon School of Nursing in San Angelo and, later, at Angelo
State University. She moved to Abilene in 1967 from San Angelo.
She volunteered at West Texas Rehabilitation Center through the
Retired Senior Volunteer Program and was a member of Abilene Woman's
Club, American Association of Retired Persons, and the Builders
Sunday School Class at St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was
the widow of Lawrence M. Young, whom she married in 1925 in Jonesboro,
Ill.; and Al M. Hartshorn, whom she married in 1976 in Baird.
Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Gustafson and Margaret
Appleton, both of Abilene, and Mary Pike of Haughton, La.; three
sons, Robert L. Young of Evansville, Ind., Ralph E. Young of Waverly,
Ill., and Paul Ray Young of Anna, Ill.; two sisters, Iola Barnett
of Beardstown, Ill., and Lucille Ethridge of Buncombe, Ill.; 16
grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Victor Galvan
Victor Galvan, 50, died Sunday at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Elliott-Hamil Funeral
Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South, with the Rev. Charles
Maciel officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Elliott-Hamil
Garden of Memories.
Mr. Galvan was born in Brownfield and graduated from Loraine
High School. He attended Texas State Technical College and Hardin-Simmons
University and married Theresa Molina in 1969 in Abilene. He worked
for the U.S. Coast Guard for 20 years until retiring. He later
was an Abilene school custodian. He was a deacon at Ambler Baptist
Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; one son, David J. Galvan
of Oakland, Calif.; one daughter, Gennie Galvan of Abilene; seven
brothers, Carlos Galvan of Goose Creek, S.C., Manuel Galvan of
Wichita Falls, Henry Galvan of Glendale, Ariz., Peter Galvan of
Arkansas, David Galvan and Felix Galvan, both of Arlington, and
Tino Galvan of Midland; three sisters, Margaret Quintela and Rita
Hernandez, both of Midland, and Edna Galvan of Anchorage, Alaska.
Max Cawley
Max Cawley, 69, salesman for Lone Star Gas for many years until
retiring in 1984, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral
Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with the Rev. Jerry Paulding
officiating. Graveside services with Masonic rites will be at
2 p.m. in Long Branch Cemetery near Cisco.
Mr. Cawley was born in Eastland County and graduated from Cisco
High School in 1946. He attended Hardin-Simmons University and
moved to Abilene in 1948 from Cisco. After retiring from Lone
Star Gas, he was a laundromat owner and operator in the Abilene
area. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Cisco and was a
Baptist.
Survivors include a longtime companion, Linda Barton of Abilene;
and several relatives.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
R.H. 'Hub' Evans Sr.
R.H. "Hub" Evans Sr., 92, died Tuesday in a local
hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral
Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South, with James Thompson
and Bill Starritt officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial
Park.
Mr. Evans was born in Swift in Nacogdoches County and attended
school in Appleby. He married Katie Bell Ragan in 1925 in Nacogdoches.
He moved in 1927 to Abilene, where he worked as an appliance repairman
for West Texas Utilities Co. until retiring in 1970. He was an
elder at Southside Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; three sons, Rufus Hubbard
"Hub" Evans Jr. of Snyder, Allen Evans of Thurber and
James Alfred "Jim" Evans of McAllen; one daughter, Mary
Janice Smith of View; one sister, Thelma Dedmon of Merkel; 15
grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren;
and one niece.

Leroy Hale
HAMLIN - Leroy Hale, 74, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Central Baptist Church
with the Revs. James Brigham and Travis Crutchfield officiating.
Burial will be in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery, directed by Foster-Adams
Funeral Home.
Mr. Hale was born in Baird and grew up in Coleman. He married
Lila Marie Sedberry in 1947 and served with the U.S. Air Force.
He worked as a small motor repairman and moved to Hamlin in 1985
from Anson. He was a member of the Hamlin chapter of the Veterans
of Foreign Wars and Central Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Hamlin; two daughters, Ann Daley
of Abilene and Linda Sue Jones of Anson; three brothers, J.B.
Hale of Hunt, Calif., Velman Hale of San Antonio and Gene Hale
of Abilene; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Myrtle Freese
SWEETWATER - Myrtle E. Freese, 84, formerly of Eastland, died
Monday in a local hospital.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Eastland Memorial
Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Wright and members of Order of the
Eastern Star 280 officiating, directed by Edwards Funeral Home
of Eastland.
Mrs. Freese was born in Childress and was a homemaker. She
moved to Eastland in 1940 and Sweetwater in 1957. She was a member
of Eastland Chapter 280, Order of the Eastern Star for more than
50 years, and Mobile Pipeline Wives. She also was a member of
First Christian Church in Eastland before transferring her membership
to Sweetwater. She was the widow of Jerome Edward Freese, whom
she married in 1930 in Walters, Okla.
Survivors include one daughter, Martha Crabtree of Eastland;
two sons, Jerome E. Freese II of Corsicana and Carl F. Freese
of Houston; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Richard Henry 'Dick' Cutting Sr.
PASADENA - Richard Henry "Dick" Cutting Sr., formerly
of Eastland County, died May 23 in a local care center.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Oakwood
Cemetery in Cisco with the Rev. Alan McGlaughlin officiating.
Arrangements were made by Pasadena Funeral Chapel.
Mr. Cutting lived at Cisco and Lake Leon for many years and
was a retired math teacher. He was a member of Episcopal Church
of the Holy Trinity in Eastland and was the widower of Beryle
Gallagher Cutting.
Survivors include one son, R.H. Cutting Jr.; two nephews and
one niece; and three great-nephews and one great-niece.

Roy Warren
COLORADO CITY - Roy Warren, 77, of Lake Colorado City, died
Tuesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Kiker-Seale Funeral
Home Chapel with the Revs. Jim Mosley and Ken Northcutt officiating.
Burial will be in Dorn Cemetery.
Mr. Warren was born in Erath County and married Mollie Mills
in 1973 in Lovington, N.M. He was a retired oilfield worker and
restaurant owner. He moved to Lake Colorado City in 1988 and was
a member of Westbrook First Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Lake Colorado City; three sons,
Audrey Warren of Stephenville, Bruce Mills of Colorado City and
Eddie Mills of Snyder; two daughters, Vickie Sargent of Fort Worth
and Glenna Johnson of Los Angeles; one brother, Martin Warren
of Victoria; one sister, Louise Dooley of Andrews; 14 grandchildren;
and seven great-grandchildren.
Joe Welch
GORMAN - Joe E. Welch, 78, of Lake Leon, died Saturday in an
Eastland hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Higginbotham Funeral Home
Chapel with the Rev. Clarence Wilson officiating. Burial will
be in Oaklawn Cemetery.
Mr. Welch was born in Ranger and worked as an oilfield driller
for many years. He was a Pentecostal and was the widower of Claudie
Wright Welch, whom he married in 1939 in Breckenridge.
Survivors include three sons, Joel Ray Welch of Balch Springs,
Jerry Welch of Houston and Lester Rich of Grand Junction, Colo.;
one daughter, Troy Scitern of Gorman; two half-brothers, Finis
Welch of Bryan and Elvon Welch of Phoenix, Ariz.; one half-sister,
Nina Skelan of Houston; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren;
and three great-great-grandchildren.
Sebastiana Martinez
COLORADO CITY - Sebastiana V. Martinez, 90, died Monday in
a local hospital.
Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today in Kiker-Seale Funeral
Home Chapel. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Ann's Catholic
Church with the Rev. Ray Wilhelm officiating. Burial will be in
Mitchell County Cemetery.
Mrs. Martinez was born in San Luis, Potosi, Mexico, and moved
to Colorado City in 1945. She was a member of the Guadalupanas
at St. Ann's Catholic Church and was the widow of Pedro Sanchez
Martinez, whom she married in 1922 in San Antonio.
Survivors include five sons, Rufino Martinez of Colorado City,
Emiterio Martinez of Hermleigh, Manuel Martinez of Waxahachie,
Juan Martinez of Snyder and Jose Martinez of San Angelo; six daughters,
Benita Davila and Bruna Gutierrez, both of Colorado City, Maria
Velasquez of Las Vegas, Nev., Irene Aldrete and Christina Ceballos,
both of Sweetwater, and Romana Bugarin of Watauga; two brothers,
Ramon Villanueva and Refugio Villanueva, both of Mexico; two sisters,
Viviana Villanueva and Carmel V. Castigea, both of Mexico; 106
grandchildren; more than 200 great-grandchildren; and 40 great-great-grandchildren.
O.C. Patty
DESDEMONA - O.C. Patty, 82, died Tuesday in De Leon.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Desdemona Church of
Christ with Tim Martin and Ray Wright officiating. Burial will
be in Desdemona Cemetery, directed by Nowlin Funeral Home of De
Leon.
Mr. Patty was born in Jones County and was a sergeant with
the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He married
Marie Ivy in 1954 in Munday and worked as an oilfield roustabout.
He moved to Desdemona in 1981 from Odessa and was a member of
the Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, of Desdemona; two sons, Marty Lynn
Patty of Daphne, Ala., and Stacy Lee Patty of Lubbock; one daughter,
Debbie Martin of Escondido, Calif.; one brother, Darwin Patty
of Stamford; one sister, Ollie Register of Stamford; and 10 grandchildren.
Bennie Parks
COLEMAN - Bennie L. Parks, 68, died Monday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Stevens Funeral Home
Chapel with the Rev. Paul Smith officiating. Burial will be in
Coleman Cemetery.
Mr. Parks was born in Oklahoma and grew up in Texas. He served
with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and married Donna L.
Russell in 1952 in Levelland. He moved to Coleman in 1971 and
was a retired oilfield roughneck.
Survivors include his wife, of Coleman; three daughters, Peggy
Johnson, Bonnie Lanham and Rosie Watts, all of Coleman; five sons,
Larry Parks of Dalhart, Donald Parks, Billy Parks and Terry Parks,
all of Coleman, and Bobby Parks of Arlington; his mother, Lillie
Parks of Silver Valley; two sisters, Gene Barnett of Silver Valley
and Shirlie Staggs of Nevada; six brothers, Jack Parks of Oklahoma,
Jerry Parks of Silver Valley, Truman Parks of Hamilton, Vernon
Parks of Bangs, Delmer Parks of Mertzon and Lloyd Parks of Coleman;
13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Clara Weaver Biard
HASKELL - Clara Weaver Biard, 85, who, with her husband, owned
and operated Biard's Cleaners for 30 years, died Monday at her
home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Haskell First Baptist
Church with the Rev. Jim Turner officiating. Burial will be in
Willow Cemetery, directed by Holden-McCauley Funeral Directors.
Mrs. Biard was born in Haskell County and graduated from Haskell
High School. She was a member of the Business and Professional
Women's Association. She attended the Fidelis Sunday School Class
at First Baptist Church and was the widow of Myron Biard, whom
she married in 1929 in Munday.
Survivors include many nieces and nephews.
The family will be at 1300 N. Ave. F.
Maurine McCuin
CROSS PLAINS - Maurine P. McCuin, 87, died Monday in an Abilene
hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Higginbotham Funeral
Home Chapel with Joe Coppinger officiating. Burial will be in
Cross Plains Cemetery.
Mrs. McCuin was born in Runnels County and worked in insurance
sales. She was a director of the Cross Plains Cemetery Association.
She was a charter member of the Cross Plains Garden Club and also
was a member of Order of the Eastern Star and First Baptist Church.
She was the widow of Alvin "Ted" J. McCuin, whom she
married in 1935 in Winters.
Survivors include one son, Jay Frank McCuin of Austin; one
daughter, Cynthia Newton of Stephenville; two grandchildren; and
three great-grandchildren.
Candi LaShawnda Sims
Candi LaShawnda Sims, 15, died Monday in Abilene. Services
are pending with Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.
Leola Steiner
Leola S. Steiner, 88, died Tuesday in a local nursing home.

Peter John 'Pete' Signer
SHERMAN - Peter John "Pete" Signer, 40, brother of
an Abilene resident, died Sunday in Sherman. A memorial service
will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Parkview Church of Christ, directed
by Waldo Funeral Home.
Dan Callaway
SNYDER - Dan Callaway, 84, died Saturday at his home after
a sudden illness. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Colonial
Hill Baptist Church, directed by Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
