Today's Obituaries (July 30, 1998)

Alta Young Hartshorn

Alta Young Hartshorn, 94, died Tuesday in a local nursing home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in St. Paul United Methodist Church with the Rev. Kathryn Boren and Dr. David Hamblin officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Mrs. Hartshorn was born in Kuttawa, Ky., and attended school in Kuttawa, Ky., and Cairo, Ill. She worked for 12 years for Illinois Bell Telephone Co. before moving to Texas in 1960. She was a housemother at Shannon School of Nursing in San Angelo and, later, at Angelo State University. She moved to Abilene in 1967 from San Angelo. She volunteered at West Texas Rehabilitation Center through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program and was a member of Abilene Woman's Club, American Association of Retired Persons, and the Builders Sunday School Class at St. Paul United Methodist Church. She was the widow of Lawrence M. Young, whom she married in 1925 in Jonesboro, Ill.; and Al M. Hartshorn, whom she married in 1976 in Baird.

Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Gustafson and Margaret Appleton, both of Abilene, and Mary Pike of Haughton, La.; three sons, Robert L. Young of Evansville, Ind., Ralph E. Young of Waverly, Ill., and Paul Ray Young of Anna, Ill.; two sisters, Iola Barnett of Beardstown, Ill., and Lucille Ethridge of Buncombe, Ill.; 16 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to West Texas Rehabilitation Center, 4601 Hartford, Abilene 79605; or St. Paul United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 3396, Abilene 79604.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Glenn Gregory

Glenn G. Gregory, 49, fourth-grade teacher at Dyess Elementary School for 15 years, died Saturday in Houston.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Wylie United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Ray officiating.

Mr. Gregory was born in Bronx, N.Y., and married Martha Ferguson in 1971 in Houston. He graduated from McMurry College in 1981 and owned A&G Chevy Parts. He was a Catholic and was an associate member of Wylie United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; one daughter, Amy Alford of Abilene; his mother, Florence Gregory of Houston; two brothers, Robert Gregory of Manassas, Va., and Paul Gregory of Orlando, Fla.; four sisters, Diane Edwards of Grand Prairie, Louise Stanford of Houston, Barbara Hamlyn of Deltona, Fla., and Mary Blade of Sugarland; one grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to the Child Development Center at Wylie United Methodist Church, 3130 Antilley Road, Abilene 79606; or a favorite charity.

Max Cawley

Max Cawley, 69, salesman for Lone Star Gas for many years until retiring in 1984, died Monday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with the Rev. Jerry Paulding officiating. Graveside services with Masonic rites will be at 2 p.m. in Long Branch Cemetery near Cisco.

Mr. Cawley was born in Eastland County and graduated from Cisco High School in 1946. He attended Hardin-Simmons University and moved to Abilene in 1948 from Cisco. After retiring from Lone Star Gas, he was a laundromat owner and operator in the Abilene area. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Cisco and was a Baptist.

Survivors include a longtime companion, Linda Barton of Abilene; and several relatives.

Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.

R.H. 'Hub' Evans Sr.

R.H. "Hub" Evans Sr., 92, died Tuesday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South, with James Thompson and Bill Starritt officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.

Mr. Evans was born in Swift in Nacogdoches County and attended school in Appleby. He married Katie Bell Ragan in 1925 in Nacogdoches. He moved in 1927 to Abilene, where he worked as an appliance repairman for West Texas Utilities Co. until retiring in 1970. He was an elder at Southside Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; three sons, Rufus Hubbard "Hub" Evans Jr. of Snyder, Allen Evans of Thurber and James Alfred "Jim" Evans of McAllen; one daughter, Mary Janice Smith of View; one sister, Thelma Dedmon of Merkel; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and one niece.

Leola Steiner

Leola S. Steiner, 88, died Tuesday in a local nursing home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Allen-Korzenewski Funeral Home Chapel with Glenn Owen officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.

Mrs. Steiner was born in Uvalde and graduated from Brady High School. She attended business college and worked for the Internal Revenue Service. She was a member of Soroptimist Club of Abilene and the Church of Christ, and was the widow of Revis Gilbert and Gus Steiner.

Survivors include one son, Patrick Dalton Gilbert of Houston; one daughter, Revis Ann Brownlie of Englewood, Colo.; two sisters, Iva Sims of Florence and Cynitha Green of Abilene; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two nieces.

Leroy Hale

HAMLIN - Leroy Hale, 74, died Monday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Central Baptist Church with the Revs. James Brigham and Travis Crutchfield officiating. Burial will be in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery, directed by Foster-Adams Funeral Home.

Mr. Hale was born in Baird and grew up in Coleman. He married Lila Marie Sedberry in 1947 and served with the U.S. Air Force. He worked as a small motor repairman and moved to Hamlin in 1985 from Anson. He was a member of the Hamlin chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Central Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Hamlin; two daughters, Ann Daley of Abilene and Linda Sue Jones of Anson; three brothers, J.B. Hale of Hunt, Calif., Velman Hale of San Antonio and Gene Hale of Abilene; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Kenneth Ray Cox

BROWNWOOD - Kenneth Ray Cox, 52, of Lake Brownwood, died Monday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 9 a.m. today in Comanche Funeral Home Chapel in Comanche. Burial will be in Blanket Cemetery.

Mr. Cox was born in Comanche and worked as an equipment operator for Kohler Industries for 10 years. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Cindy Walsh of Lake Brownwood; one son, Brian Dale Cox of Laughlin, Nev.; two daughters, Shanna Walsh and Stephanie Walsh, both of Lake Brownwood; his mother, Ima Jewel Cox of Blanket; one sister, Duronda K. Cox of Blanket; four brothers, Dalton W. Cox of Brownwood, Rodney L. Cox of Abilene, and Marvin G. Cox and Arvil G. Cox, both of Blanket; and several nieces and nephews.

Bernice Gregg

GORMAN - Bernice Gregg, 92, of Copperas Cove and formerly of the Gorman area, died Tuesday in a Copperas Cove nursing home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today in Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel with A.C. Morris officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

Mrs. Gregg was born in Gray and married T.Y. "Boots" Gregg in 1928 in Cisco. She worked in food service for the Gorman school system for many years. She moved to Copperas Cove in 1984 from the Gorman area and was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include one daughter, Runez Wrachford of Copperas Cove; one son, Billy E. Gregg of San Antonio; two brothers, Gene Wright of Lake Leon and Gaylon "Gabe" Wright of Mineral Wells; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Verna Mae Turpin Lappe

BROWNWOOD - Verna Mae Turpin Lappe, 88, died Monday in a San Angelo nursing home.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in May Cemetery, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lappe was born in May and was a homemaker. She was a Baptist and was the widow of Wilmoth Fredrick Lappe, whom she married in 1930.

Survivors include one son, Bryan Lappe of Cerrillas, N.M.; three sisters, Eoline Kowierschke of Castell, Ruby Bible of Stillwater, Okla., and Alto West of San Angelo; one brother, Wyke Turpin of Jacksboro; one grandchild; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Delton Ripley

MULLIN - Delton Ripley died Wednesday in a Gatesville hospital. Services are pending with Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home of Goldthwaite.

Scott Boss

Scott A. Boss, 43, died Wednesday at his home. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel, 5750 U.S. Hwy 277 South.

Darwin Watson

SANTA ANNA - Darwin T. Watson, 87, of San Antonio and formerly of Santa Anna, died Tuesday at his home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Henderson Funeral Home Chapel.

Bertha Mae Cotton

DUNN - Bertha Mae Cotton, 92, of Hobbs, N.M., and formerly of Dunn, died Tuesday in a Hobbs hospital after a lengthy illness. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel in Snyder.

Lakin Pake Rosenquist

STAMFORD - Lakin Pake Rosenquist, infant, died Tuesday in a Fort Worth hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday in East Side Baptist Church in Haskell, directed by Holden-McCauley Funeral Directors of Haskell.
