Today's Obituaries (Aug. 4, 1998)

Thomas Terry Franklin

Thomas Terry Franklin, 83, died Monday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with the Rev. James Brigham officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memorial Cemetery in Stamford.

Mr. Franklin was born in Bagwell and attended school in the Cougar community. He was a retired farmer and a member of Second Baptist Church. He married Lucy Mae Franklin in 1937 in Springtown; she preceded him in death. He married Minnie Franklin in 1991.

Survivors include his wife of Abilene; one son, Howard E. Franklin of Odessa; one stepson, Bill Snow of Abilene; one stepdaughter, Faye Edwards of Fort Worth; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Nettie Barnes

Nettie M. Barnes, 92, died Saturday at a Tyler hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elmwood Baptist Church with the Rev. John Wade officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park Cemetery, directed by North's Funeral Home, 242 Orange.

Mrs. Barnes grew up in Raines County and attended East Texas State College. She taught two years at Willow Springs. She moved to Abilene from Trent in 1936 and to Tyler in 1991. She taught Sunday school at Elmwood Baptist Church for more than 50 years and was a charter member. She was a homemaker. She married Hoyt Louie Barnes in 1927 in Crystal City; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include three sons, Army Brig. Gen. (ret.) Wilman Dale Barnes of Alexandria, Va., Carroll Wayne Barnes of Garland and Alan Barnes of Flint; one brother, Owen Northcutt of Emory; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Elmwood Baptist Church, 2933 S. 7th, Abilene 79606.

The family will be at the funeral home from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Johnny Wayne Hammond

MERKEL -- Johnny Wayne Hammond, 63, died Sunday at his home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Greg Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home.

Mr. Hammond was born in Arp and graduated from Merkel High School in 1954. He was an Eagle Scout and a Marine Corps veteran. He worked for the city of Abilene Water Department, Rocking S Truck Stop in Livingston, Oil Transport Co., Cal-Tex Feed and Ben Franklin Store. He was a member of Merkel Senior Citizens and First United Methodist Church. He also worked at Fisher's Fina station in Merkel for 10 years.

Survivors include his mother, Ruby Sessions Hammond of Merkel; one daughter, Mary Elizabeth Ozuna Hammond of Abilene; three brothers, Sessions Hammond of Hawley, David Hammond of Hurst and Bob Hammond of Merkel; and several nieces and nephews.

D.B. 'Brown' Kennedy

BROWNWOOD -- D.B. "Brown" Kennedy, 73, of May died Thursday in Montgomery, Ala.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ken Green officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.

Mr. Kennedy was born in Owens and was a longtime resident of May and formerly of Arlington. He was a farmer and rancher and retired from General Motors in Arlington after 35 years. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of American Legion Post 470 and the Baptist church.

Survivors include his wife, Enid Arnold Kennedy of May; two daughters, Louise "Tinker" Loudermilk and Beth Kennedy, both of Arlington; three stepchildren, Doyle Arnold and LaVada Harms, both of Millbrook, Ala., and Nadra Kuykendall of Brownwood; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. today.

Aldo Ray Torres

WINTERS -- Aldo Ray Torres, 32, died Saturday in Winters.

Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Winters Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mount Carmel Catholic Church with the Rev. Sam Homsey officiating. Burial will be in Latin American Cemetery in Ballinger.

Mr. Torres was born in San Angelo and moved to Winters as a child. He graduated from high school in Winters in 1985 and was an Army veteran of Desert Storm. He returned to Winters in May and was employed by Gerber Manufacturing in Ballinger. He was a Catholic. He married Rebecca Ann Kepple in 1989 in Jefferson County, Ky.

Survivors include his wife of Shepherdsville, Ky.; one son, Matthew Ray Torres of Shepherdsville; his mother and stepfather, Mary and Alfonso Esquivel of Winters; his father, Joe Torres of Lansing, Mich.; a grandmother, Juanita Medrano of Ballinger; two brothers, Randy Ray Watson of Winters and Jerry Henry Esquivel of San Angelo; two sisters, Melissa Ann Willmon of Seattle and Michelle Lee Torres of Winters; and three nieces.

Phoebe Alyce Tarver Bradshaw

MERKEL -- Phoebe Alyce Tarver Bradshaw died Sunday at an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Greg Kennedy and Jimmy Griffith officiating. Entombment will be in Elmwood Memorial Park in Abilene, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home.

Mrs. Bradshaw was born in Dalhart and moved to Merkel in 1993 after living in Midland and Abilene. She was a homemaker and a member of First United Methodist Church. She married Rex Bradshaw in 1974 in Raton, N.M.

Survivors include her husband of Merkel; two daughters, Cheryl Smith of Frisco and Billie Nordmeyer of Plano; one brother, Ray Foster of Dalhart; one sister, Edythe Gutherie of Riverside, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 41, Abilene 79604; or Cal Farley's Boys Ranch, 600 W. 11th Ave., Amarillo 79101.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today.

Lois Etheleene Long Trammel

ASPERMONT -- Lois Etheleene Long Trammel, 91, died Monday at a Hamlin hospital.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Resthaven Cemetery in Lubbock with the Rev. Barry Taylor officiating, directed by McCoy Funeral Home.

Mrs. Trammel was born in Stonewall County and taught school at Brazos Valley, Shinery Lake and Aspermont. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She married Henry Ray Trammel in 1927; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, Worth Trammel of Navasota; three sisters, Nadine Boyles of Aspermont, Margaret Suter of Old Glory and Elva Wren of Hamlin; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6-7:30 p.m. today.

Jessie Maude Maberry

HAMLIN -- Jessie Maude Maberry, 91, died Monday at an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jeff Sedberry and Martin Encke officiating. Burial will be in Hamlin Memorial Cemetery, directed by Foster-Adams Funeral Home.

Mrs. Maberry was born in Hammond, La., and moved to Johnson County in 1912 and to Fisher County in 1914. She graduated from McCaulley High School in 1923 and from Hardin-Simmons School of Music with a diploma in voice in 1927. She graduated from McMurry College with a bachelor's degree in 1961 and taught music at school systems in McCaulley, Wingate, Bethel and Hamlin, retiring in 1973. She was a member of First United Methodist Church for more than 50 years and directed the choir for 20 years. She was former president and chorus director for the Hamlin Music Club. She married Willard Maberry in 1937 in Roby; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Margaret Calhoun of Hamlin and Maedean Geoffroy of Amarillo; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

James Gray

STAMFORD -- James Gray, of West Columbia and formerly of Stamford, died Sunday at a Sweeny hospital. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Highland Memorial Cemetery, directed by Tankersley Funeral Home.

James 'Jim' Simpson

SNYDER -- James D. "Jim" Simpson, 75, died Sunday at a local hospital after a brief illness. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, directed by Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.

Nola Alice Richter

RISING STAR -- Nola Alice Richter, 77, died Monday in Fort Worth. Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel.

Samuel Jamal Modkins

SWEETWATER -- Samuel Jamal Modkins, infant, died Friday in El Paso. Services are pending with McCoy Funeral Home.
