Today's Obituaries (Aug. 10, 1998)

Edwin Culbertson

Edwin H. Culbertson, 84, died Saturday at a local nursing home.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at North's Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, 4002 Buffalo Gap Road, with Dr. Lawrence Culbertson and the Rev. Mike Woodward officiating. Burial will be in Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery in Goldthwaite.

Mr. Culbertson was born in Childress and grew up in Tyler. He worked for Schlumberger Well Surveying Corporation for 39 years, retiring in 1975. He had worked in Tyler, Wichita Falls, Eastland, Abilene and Houston and returned to Abilene after retiring. He was a member of A.A.R.P. and Southwest Park Baptist Church. He married Velma Seabourn in 1935 in Kilgore.

Survivors include his wife of Abilene; one daughter, Virginia Kay Blewster of Corsicana; two brothers, Lois Culbertson of Tyler and Richard Culbertson of Beaumont; two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hendrick Hospice, Sears Methodist Nursing Home or Southwest Park Baptist Church.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6-7:30 p.m. today.

Jo Nell Gary Rice

Jo Nell Gary Rice, 75, of Dallas and formerly of Abilene, died Saturday at a local care center.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Restland Cemetery in Dallas, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Mrs. Rice was born in Kimbell County, graduated from Wylie High School and attended Hardin-Simmons University. She lived in Abilene for many years and worked for General Motors in Dallas for many years in the bookkeeping department. She was a Baptist. She married C.E. "Buster" Rice in Abilene; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, Russell Edward Rice; two brothers, Bill Gary of Goldsboro and Leon Gary of Buffalo Gap; and one sister, Dixie G. Lewis of Junction.

Buford 'Junior' Scott Jr.

LUEDERS -- Buford "Junior" Scott Jr., 73, died Sunday at his home.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Fort Phantom Hill Cemetery with Thurman Thomas officiating, directed by Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home of Anson.

Mr. Scott was born in Nugent and graduated from Lueders High School in 1943. He was a veteran of World War II and retired as an oil field pumper in 1985. He lived in Nugent until moving to Lueders in 1986. He was a member of Lueders Church of Christ and Veterans of Foreign Wars. He married Jane Baker in 1949 in San Angelo.

Survivors include his wife of Lueders; three daughters, Sara Blackwell of Tuxedo, Sally Lobstein of Lueders and Judy Wilson of Abilene; one brother, Perry Scott of Clyde; one sister, Frances Shelton of Abilene; four grandchildren, one great-grandchild and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Fort Phantom Hill Cemetery Association.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today.

Peggy Jennell Polston

MERKEL -- Peggy Jennell Polston, 57, died Saturday at an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Starbuck Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Griffith officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.

Mrs. Polston was born in Bridgeport and was a homemaker and a home health care aide. She married Ted Polston in 1968 in Fort Worth.

Survivors include her husband of Merkel; one son, James Kevin Correll of Mineral Wells; two daughters, Cheryl Lynn Hodges of Melbourne, Ark., and Kimberly Dawn Polston of Merkel; one brother, Danny Joe Chilton of Fort Worth; and two grandchildren.

Frank 'Sarge' Jircik

HASKELL -- Frank P. "Sarge" Jircik, 80, died Saturday at a Burleson hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Jim Turner and Dr. Troy Culpepper officiating. Burial will be in Willow Cemetery, directed by Holden-McCauley Funeral Directors.

Mr. Jircik was born in Rosenberg and retired from the Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Division in 1980 after 39 years. He was a Baptist, a member of Masonic Lodge 862 and was active with teen-age baseball. He married Bonnell Bailey in 1939 in Huntsville.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Carol Hickman of Stamford; one son, Dr. Frank Jircik Jr. of Fort Worth; one foster son, Herbert Polgue of Pasadena; one brother, Jerry Jircik of Alvin; four sisters, Lilly Lindsey of Tulsa, Okla., Martha Ernst of Carlsbad, Calif., Marie Strahan and Betty Coon, both of Pasadena; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Fort Worth Academy Baseball Field, 7301 Dutch Branch Road, Fort Worth 76132; or Scottish Rite Children Hospital, 2222 Welborn, Dallas 75219.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today.

Ray Oliphant

HASKELL -- Ray P. Oliphant, 95, a lifelong resident of Haskell, died Friday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church with the Rev. Roy Herricks officiating. Burial will be in Willow Cemetery, directed by Holden-McCauley Funeral Directors.

Mr. Oliphant was born in Bell County and worked as a truck driver and in agriculture. He was a member of First Baptist Church for 80 years. He was the widower of Willamet Johnson.

Survivors include two daughters, Sallie Camp of Colorado City and Jane Reeder of Clay Pool, Ariz.; one son, John Oliphant of Perris, Calif.; three sisters, Elsie McGee of Haskell, Bennie Ammons of Pampa and Nora Ammons of Brownfield; 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, 25 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Charlotte Allen

EASTLAND -- Charlotte M. Allen, 81, died Sunday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Baptist Church. Burial will be in Eastland City Cemetery, directed by Edwards Funeral Home.

Mrs. Allen was born in Eastland. She worked for Hollywood Vaserete as a seamstress and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She married Dennis Allen in 1936 in Eastland.

Survivors include her husband, of Eastland; one daughter, Cindye Foster of Athens, Texas; two sisters, Ina Mae Riggan and Grace Crabtree, both of Eastland; two brothers, O.D. Finley of Palestine, Texas, and A.G. Finley of St. Petersburg, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Church or the Alzheimer's Association.

The family will be at 414 S. Oaklawn.

J.H. 'Jim' Redman

BIG SPRING -- J.H. "Jim" Redman, 87, died Sunday at a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Trinity Memorial Park with the Rev. Eddie Tubbs officiating, directed by Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Mr. Redman was born in Comanche County and worked for El Paso Natural Gas Company for more than 40 years, retiring in 1976. He moved from Big Spring to Odessa in 1976 and was a member of First Baptist Church. He married Edith Cunningham in 1939 in Big Spring.

Survivors include his wife of Big Spring; one daughter, Joy Burnsed of Big Spring; one son, James Larry Redman of Odessa; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Memorials may be made to American Heart Association, 3525 Andrews Hwy., Suite 111, Midland 79703.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today.

Birthel Deola Frazier

SWEETWATER -- Birthel Deola Frazier, 98, died Saturday at a local retirement center. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Garden of Memories, directed by McCoy Funeral Home.

Floy May Nichols

COMANCHE -- Floy May Nichols, 94, died Sunday at a Brownwood hospital. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Comanche Funeral Home Chapel.

Catherine Hammit

SNYDER -- Catherine Hammit, 82, died Saturday at her home after a brief illness. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel.

Andrea Castillo Pacheco

SNYDER -- Andrea Castillo Pacheco, 81, died Saturday at her home. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, directed by Wright Colonial Funeral Home.

Martha Taylor

Martha Taylor, 84, died Sunday at a local hospital. Services are pending with Allen-Korzenewski Funeral Home.

Weldon Calvin Houchin

STAMFORD -- Weldon Calvin Houchin, 65, died Friday at an Abilene hospital. The body was cremated, directed by Tankersley Funeral Home. No services are planned.

Lavada Rains Rector

STAMFORD -- Lavada Rains Rector, 90, died Sunday at a local nursing home. Services are pending with Tankersley Funeral Home.

Angie Honeycutt

BIG SPRING -- Angie Honeycutt, 36, died Friday. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Myers and Smith Funeral Home Chapel.

Dora Ann 'Doodle' Williams

DE LEON -- Dora Ann "Doodle" Williams, 82, died Sunday at a local hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joe Baptist Church, directed by Nowlin Funeral Home.

Charles Wolfe

Charles Wolfe, 78, of Abilene died Sunday at his home. Services are pending with Allen-Korzenewski Funeral Home, 1443 N. 2nd.
