Today's Obituaries (Aug. 24, 1998)

Woodrow Weir Sr.

Woodrow W. Weir Sr., 85, died Saturday at a local care center.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy. 277 South, with Woodrow Weir Jr. officiating.

Mr. Weir was born in Georgetown, where he graduated from high school, and received a degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Texas in 1937. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and worked for Pennzoil Oil Company in Shreveport, La., until retiring in 1978. He lived in Abilene from 1946-1960 and returned to Abilene from Midland in 1986. He married Cecile Cox in 1940 in Minden, La.

Survivors include one son, Woodrow Weir Jr. of Abilene; one sister, Mary Louise Smith of San Antonio; and two grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 41, Abilene 79604.

The family will be at the funeral home after the services.

Cornelia Dunham

Cornelia Dunham, 92, a former longtime resident of Garfield Park, South Hackensack, N.J., died Sunday at an Abilene hospital.

Services will be Friday at Vander May Funeral Home in Wayne, N.J. Burial will be in Lodi, N.J., Cemetery. Local arrangements were by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Mrs. Dunham was born in Garfield Park, where she lived for 91 years. She retired from Spinneran Yarn Co. and moved to Abilene in 1997. She was the widow of Harold Dunham.

Survivors include one son, Russ Dunham of Abilene; two grandchildren, one great-granddaughter and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Buffalo Gap Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.

George Hugh Hibbitts

George Hugh Hibbitts, 65, of Abilene died Saturday at a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Mr. Hibbitts was born in Throckmorton and graduated from high school in Wheeler in 1950. He moved to Abilene in 1951 and graduated from Abilene Christian College (now Abilene Christian University) in 1958. He worked for Nucorp Energy, General Dynamics, KRBC and Treanor Equipment and was controller of Ab-Tex Beverage Corp. at the time of his death. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Wheeler and was active on several Abilene Chamber of Commerce committees. He served on the City Planning and Zoning Commission, as director and treasurer of Abilene Community Theater, on the budget committee and as director of United Way of Abilene and on the physical education committee of the YMCA. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He married Betty Bethel in 1953 in Abilene.

Survivors include his wife of Abilene; one son, Kerry Ray Hibbitts of Oklahoma City; two daughters, Glenda Parr of Plano and Linda Ann Hibbitts of Clyde; two grandsons and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 41, Abilene 79604; Texas Cancer Center, 1957 Antilley Road, Abilene 79606; or M.D. Anderson Cancer Research, 1515 Holcombe Blvd., Houston 77030.

The family will be at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. today.

Frances Daw

Frances L. Daw, 62, of Abilene died Friday at an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Wylie Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Patterson officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 U.S. Hwy. 277 South.

Mrs. Daw was born in Mitchell County and attended school in Big Spring. She moved to Abilene from Weatherford in 1988. She was a homemaker and a member of Wylie Baptist Church. She married Leslie Daw in 1952 in Colorado City.

Survivors include her husband of Abilene; one son, Rick Daw of Plano; one daughter, Vicki Kerr of Abilene; her mother, Bertha Montgomery of Abilene; one brother, Raymond Bedford of Odessa; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Zachary Javier Flores

FORT WORTH - Zachary Javier Flores, infant, died Saturday at a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Skyvue Memorial Gardens, directed by Benbrook Funeral Home.

Survivors include his parents, Javier and Michelle Flores of Fort Worth; one brother, Isaac Flores of Fort Worth; one sister, Shayla Flores of Fort Worth; grandparents Rex and Jennifer Townsley of Abilene, Frank and Phyllis Eisenman of White Settlement and Johnny and Nora Vaughan of Zapata; great-grandparents Lucille Townsley of Abilene, Ruth Jones of Bridgeport and Elpidia and Felicitas Araiza of Zapata; and many other relatives.

Dana Bruce 'D.B.' Henderson

BROWNWOOD - Dana Bruce "D.B." Henderson, 82, of Bangs and formerly of McCulloch County, died Sunday at a Brownwood hospital after a sudden illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. R.D. "Dick" Williams officiating. Burial will be in Cox Cemetery in McCulloch County.

Mr. Henderson was born in Milburn and grew up in McCulloch County. He had lived in Bangs since 1995 and was a farmer and a member of Mercury Baptist Church. He served with the A.S.C.S. in McCulloch County for nine years. He married Valera Adams in 1934.

Survivors include his wife of Bangs; one son, Dana Henderson Jr. of Cleburne; one daughter, Marlene Wood of Abilene; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6:30-7:30 p.m. today.

Father Winston Jensen

DUBLIN - Father Winston Jensen, 68, died Sunday at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, directed by Harrell Funeral Home.

Father Jensen was born in Rugby, N.D., and had lived in Dublin since 1995, where he had been resident priest for Trinity Episcopal Church.

Survivors include one brother, Waldon Jensen of Grand Forks, N.D.; five nephews, three nieces and one aunt.

Ricardo 'Richard' Tamez

WINTERS - Ricardo "Richard" Tamez, 49, of Wingate died Sunday at a local hospital.

Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Winters Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Mount Carmel Catholic Church with the Rev. Sam Homsey officiating. Burial will be in Wingate Cemetery.

Mr. Tamez was born in Victoria and moved to Wingate in the late 1970s. He was employed by Dry Manufacturing Company and was a member of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. He married Henerietta Lara in 1972 in Belton.

Survivors include his wife of Wingate; four sons, Richard Tamez Jr., Pete Joe Tamez, Enriquez Tamez and Adam Tamez, all of Wingate; one daughter, Rosa Maria Perez of Wingate; four brothers, Domingo Ramos of Belton, Salvador Ramos of Temple, Raymon Tamez of Crookson, Fla., and Joe Tamez of Winters; three sisters, Lupe Ramos of Belton, Pauline Artize of El Campo and Severa Reyes of Wingate; and six grandchildren.

Willie Oren Shirley

SWEETWATER - Willie Oren Shirley, 69, of San Angelo and formerly of Breckenridge, Wichita Falls and Nolan, died Sunday in San Angelo.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel of Memories with the Revs. Joe Stewart and Gary Hiler officiating. Burial will be in Nolan Cemetery.

Mr. Shirley was born in Nolan and was a retired boot maker. He lived in Nolan and Wichita Falls from 1949-1985 before moving to Breckenridge and later to San Angelo. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include two sisters, Mary Elmore and Wanda Mullican, both of Breckenridge; and two brothers, Milton Shirley of Sweetwater and Miaron Shirley of San Angelo.

Nancy Jane Birmingham

SWEETWATER - Nancy Jane Birmingham, 55, died Sunday at an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Heights United Methodist Church with the Rev. Carl Thorell officiating. Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery, directed by McCoy Funeral Home.

Mrs. Birmingham was born in Sweetwater, where she lived all her life. She graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1961 and was a saleswoman for Richburg Furniture Store. She had been a cashier for Star Discount and Munden Discount Stores. She was a member of Highland Heights United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one sister, Mary Ruth Cohlmia of Midland; two brothers, Ray Birmingham Jr. of Midland and Guy Birmingham of Houston; and several nieces and nephews.

Winnie (Mim) Carson Smith

PEARSALL - Winnie (Mim) Carson Smith, 100, of Brownwood died Saturday in Brownwood.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at First Baptist Church in Pearsall. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today in Pearsall Cemetery with the Rev. Burlie Taylor officiating, directed by Kimbrough Funeral Home of Cisco.

Mrs. Smith was born in Carrizo Springs and graduated from O'Hanis High School in 1915. She was employed by the Utopia Telephone Company in Uvalde County and was a contract seamstress for the war efforts during World War I and World War II. She was a member of First Baptist Church. She married Thomas Washington Smith in 1924 in Pearsall.

Survivors include two daughters, Gertrude Smith Watson of Austin and Margaret Ann Smith Neal of Early; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Nona Cobb

BROWNWOOD - Nona Cobb, 94, died Saturday at a local nursing home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Ron Cook officiating. Burial will be in Zephyr Cemetery in Zephyr.

Mrs. Cobb was born in Zephyr and taught school for more than 45 years in Dawson, Mason and Jones counties and for 18 years in Brownwood. She was a member of Brown County Retired Teachers Association, Texas State Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma and Brown County Historical Society. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

Survivors include one brother, Robert Cobb of Brownwood; two nieces, two nephews and several great- and great-great- nieces and nephews.

Letha Philen

BROWNWOOD - Letha E. Philen, 98, died Sunday at a local nursing home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Davis-Morris Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Kenneth Green officiating. Burial will be in Indian Creek Cemetery.

Mrs. Philen was born in Indian Creek and had lived in Brown County all her life. She was a homemaker and a member of Southside Assembly of God. She was the widow of Virgil McDearmon and Josh Philen.

Survivors include two daughters, Avis Jones of Ranger and Anita Middleton of Early; two sons, William Philen of Brownwood and Rob Philen of Dallas; one sister, Vela Posey of Brownwood; three brothers, Odie McCoy, Kyle McCoy and Raymond McCoy, all of Brownwood; 14 grandchildren and a number of great- and great-great-grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6:30-7:30 p.m. today.

Irvin Dee 'Nubbin' Corn

BAIRD - Irvin Dee "Nubbin" Corn, 93, died Sunday at a local nursing home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Knox Waggoner officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ricky Carstensen. Burial will be in Ross Cemetery Annex, directed by Parker Funeral Home.

Mr. Corn was born in Putnam and lived in Callahan County all his life. He worked for the Premier refinery in Baird for 30 years, then was a Callahan county commissioner for 12 years. He also worked for Rogers Food Store for many years. He was a member of First United Methodist Church and served on the Administrative Council for many years. He was a 50-year member of Baird Masonic Lodge 522 and a member of Shriners and Woodmen of the World. He married Euless Stephens in 1926 in Baird.

Survivors include his wife of Baird; one daughter, Sally Gay Odom McDaniel of Phillips, S.D.; two sons, Jack Corn and Roger Corn, both of Baird; one sister, Opal Francisco of Jal, N.M.; three brothers, Raymond Corn of Baird, Ben Corn of Tyler and Weldon Corn of Ajo, Ariz.; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund at First United Methodist Church in Baird.

Helen Phillips

EASTLAND - Helen L. Phillips, 79, died Sunday at an Abilene hospital.

Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Edwards Funeral Home Chapel. Mass will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Xavier Church. Burial will be in Eastland City Cemetery.

Mrs. Phillips was born in Opelousas, La., and graduated from Catholic school in Crowley, La. She lived in several locations before moving to Sipe Springs and, in 1948, to Eastland. She worked for Hollywood Vaserette Clothing Factory for 28 years. After retiring, she worked as a sales clerk in several dress shops and for Eastland Beauty Supply. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Morton Valley Home Demonstration Club and HECE and volunteered with Ranger and Eastland hospital auxiliaries. She married Orval Philips in 1938 in Crowley, La.; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, James Phillips of Konawa, Okla.; one daughter, Judy Underwood of Eastland; one sister, Essie Huval of Vidor; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.

Delrose Bailey

BIG SPRING - Delrose Bailey, 73, died Sunday at a local hospital. Private memorial services will be held at a later date, directed by Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Bert Edgington

BIG SPRING - Bert Edgington, 22, died Sunday at a Lubbock hospital after a lengthy illness. Services are pending with Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Dr. D.R. 'Doc' Kerby

GOLDTHWAITE - Dr. D.R. "Doc" Kerby, 78, died Saturday at a Gatesville care center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel.

Joyce 'Gerry' Duncan

RANGER - Joyce "Gerry" Duncan, 68, died Saturday at an Eastland hospital. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Merriman Cemetery, directed by Edwards Funeral Home.

Gloria Lopez Gutierrez

COMANCHE - Gloria Lopez Gutierrez, 50, died Sunday at a local hospital. Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Oakwood Cemetery, directed by Comanche Funeral Home.

Lucy Vines

SWEETWATER - Lucy Vines, 86, of Brownwood and formerly of Sweetwater, died Saturday at a Brownwood hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel.

Allie Brown

BROWNWOOD - Allie Brown, 86, died Sunday at a local nursing home. Services are pending with Heartland Funeral Home of Early.

Al Brower

SWEETWATER - Al Brower, 75, died Friday in Tucson, Ariz. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at McCoy Funeral Home Chapel of Memories.

Flora Wooten

Flora Wooton, 94, a longtime Abilene resident, died Saturday in Abilene. Services are pending with Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Ernesto 'Ernie' Cerda Jr.

SNYDER - Ernesto "Ernie" Cerda Jr., 17, died Saturday in Snyder after a traffic accident. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. today at Wright Colonial Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wright Colonial Funeral Home Chapel.
