Today's Obituaries (Aug. 28, 1998)

Jewel Harmon Vinson

Jewel Harmon Vinson, 89, formerly of Abilene, died Sunday in a San Antonio hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with the Rev. Doyle Pruitt officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.

Mrs. Vinson was born in Abilene, where she attended school and lived most of her life. She returned to Abilene in 1955 and worked at Thornton's Department Store for nine years and Levine's for 13 years. She was a part-time caregiver and babysitter past the age of 80. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Abilene and was the widow of Cecil Clyde Harmon, whom she married in 1925 in Abilene; and James Earl Vinson, whom she married in 1965 in Abilene.

Survivors include four grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to Liberty Baptist Church, 1149 E.S. 11th, Abilene 79602.

I.V. Loper Ward

I.V. Loper Ward, 79, formerly of Abilene, died Wednesday in Lawton, Okla.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with the Rev. Jerry Paulding officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery.

Mrs. Ward was born in Abilene and graduated from Abilene High School in 1937. She worked as a seamstress and also was a restaurant manager for Interstate Co. She later was employed by Timex as an inspector on the assembly line until retiring in 1974. She was a member of Pythian Sisters in Abilene and Bethel Baptist Church in Lawton, Okla., and was the widow of L.F. Loper and Floyd "Bud" Ward.

Survivors include two daughters, Janice Geisler of Kunkletown, Pa., and Pat McCune of Elgin, Okla.; two stepsons, Darwin Ward and Floyd "Dee" Ward, both of Houston; seven grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 7-9 p.m. today in the funeral home.

Clema Harrison

Clema C. Harrison, 84, formerly of McKinney, died Tuesday in a local nursing home.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Wilson Chapel Cemetery in Collin County, southeast of McKinney, with the Rev. Dan Buster officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Miss Harrison was born in Limestone County, Ala., and moved to Abilene more than 50 years ago. She was a domestic worker and was a member of North Side Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sisters, Irma Harrison of Dallas and Leona Ruth Reynolds of Phoenix, Ariz.; and one brother, Alvin L. Harrison of Tulsa, Okla.

Visitation will be from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.

Ray Nunnally

RISING STAR - Ray Nunnally, 85, high school principal from 1946 until retiring in 1974, died Wednesday in an Abilene hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today in Rising Star Church of Christ with Gary Adams and Jim Nash officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery in Somerville, directed by Higginbotham Funeral Home.

Mr. Nunnally was born in Rising Star, where he was a lifelong area resident. He graduated from Rising Star High School in 1933 and Howard Payne University in Brownwood in 1937. He then taught school at May for seven years and also was a former superintendent. He served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and was an athletic coach at Rising Star from 1946-60. The Rising Star football team, under his guidance, went undefeated in 1948 and 1949 and had a 34-game winning streak. The boys track team finished runner-up at the state meet in 1949 and won it in 1950. He earned his master's degree from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene. He married Eleanor Tucker in 1938 in Cisco and was a member of the Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, of Rising Star; one son, Ken Nunnally of Angleton; two daughters, Kay Belk of Pearland and Debbie Zoet of Conroe; two brothers, Bob Nunnally of Abilene and Gale Nunnally of Cisco; one sister, Ruby Bailey of Rising Star; and six grandchildren.

Jimmy Kelly

ARLINGTON - Jimmy D. Kelly, 61, brother of an Abilene resident, died Tuesday at his home.

A memorial service was held Thursday in Moore Funeral Home Chapel.

Mr. Kelly was born in Honey Grove and worked as a tool engineer for Tex Star Plastics for more than 30 years until retiring. He was the widower of Ann Barcroft Kelly.

Survivors include one son, Jimmy D. Kelly Jr. of Mead, Okla.; his father and stepmother, Bill and Margaret Kelly of Fort Worth; one brother, Buster Kelly of Abilene; one sister, Kathy Carpenter of Honey Grove; two grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to Family Hospice of Fort Worth, 5424 Rufe Snow Drive, Suite 414, Fort Worth 76180; and American Cancer Society.

Clifton Henry Bode

CLYDE - Clifton Henry Bode, 81, of Abilene and formerly of the Clyde-Eula area, died Thursday in an Abilene nursing home.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Clyde Cemetery with Dr. Don Greenway officiating, directed by Bailey Funeral Home.

Mr. Bode was born in Cherokee near San Saba and attended school in Breckenridge. He moved to the Clyde-Eula area in 1961 from the Brownfield area and worked as a truck driver. He was a Methodist.

Survivors include two sons, Clifton "Junior" Bode of Abilene and Clifton "Buster" Bode of Atlanta; one daughter, Laura Nell Jessup of Cisco; one sister, Frances Louise Bode of Trent; 13 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Hugh Lee McGuffin

WINTERS - Hugh Lee McGuffin, 99, died Thursday in a local nursing home.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Eden Cemetery with Chris Chant officiating, directed by Winters Funeral Home.

Mr. McGuffin was born in Mason County and married Annie Frances Laman in 1923 in Menard. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for Concho County and was a Baptist.

Survivors include two sons, Gordon C. McGuffin and Dawson McGuffin, both of Winters; two daughters, Frances Imogene Pentecost of Early and Thelma Pearl King of Smithville, Miss.; 11 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Rudolph Mena Sr.

FLUVANNA - Rudolph Mena Sr., 65, died Thursday in a Snyder hospital after a lengthy illness. Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m. today in Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel in Snyder. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home.

Ruby Goldston

RISING STAR - Ruby Goldston, 77, died Wednesday in a Brownwood hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Higginbotham Funeral Home Chapel.

Chester Leo Hogan

BRECKENRIDGE - Chester Leo Hogan, 76, died Thursday in a local nursing home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Breckenridge Cemetery, directed by Morehart Mortuary.

Teresa McElmurray Justice

TRENT - Teresa McElmurray Justice, 44, of Eagle Nest, N.M., and formerly of Trent, died Wednesday from injuries received in a one-car accident in Eagle Nest. Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Trent United Methodist Church, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home of Merkel.
