Today's Obituaries (Sept. 8, 1998)

Roy Thomas Scoggins

Roy Thomas Scoggins, 36, died Sunday at an Abilene hospital.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Eastside Baptist Church, with Pastor David Page officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Valley Cemetery under the direction of Holden-McCauley Funeral Directors.

Mr. Scoggins was born on Oct. 10, 1961, in Lubbock. He had been a resident of Haskell since 1977 and worked as a truck driver for seven years. He loved drag racing and participated in races at both Abilene and San Angelo.

Survivors include his father, Russell Scoggins of Abilene; three sisters, Terry Scoggins, Tonya Scoggins and Sonya Thornhill, all of Haskell; one brother, Coy Scoggins of Haskell.

Don R. Jackson

Don R. Jackson, 56, died Monday in a local hospital.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at North's Memorial Chapel, 242 Orange St., with Chaplain Price Mathieson officiating. His body will be cremated.

Raised in Abilene, Mr. Jackson graduated from Abilene High School and attended Texas Tech and the University of Texas. He married Melynda Murphey Aug. 13, 1979, in Las Vegas, Nev. He was a rancher before retiring in 1996, operating the 100-year-old family ranch in Callahan County. He was a past member of the Abilene Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Melynda Jackson of Abilene; a daughter, Ashley Jackson of Abilene; a step-daughter, Marilyn Henning of Abilene. The family requests memorials be sent to the Episcopal Church of the Heavenly Rest.

Infant

BIG SPRING - The infant child of Sherri Smith and Chris Roberts died at birth Saturday at Lubbock Methodist Hospital.

Graveside services for the infant will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Memorial Park, under the direction of Myers and Smith Funeral Home.

Survivors include the child's parents, Sherri Smith and Chris Roberts of Sand Springs; grandparents, Darlene Smith of Snyder, Jay Smith of Germany, Burl and Shirleen Knox of Sand Springs, Larry and Janet Roberts of Brownwood; great-grandparents, John and Ruby Knox of Big Spring, Jean Shaw of Snyder, Charles Shaw of Odessa, T.J. and Elma Smith of Odessa, Don Roberts of Brownwood, Gwen Talley of Brownwood, and several aunts and uncles.

Bryce Johnson

Bryce Johnson, 59, formerly of Abilene, died Friday in a Dallas Hospital.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the Stith Cemetery in Jones County, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory St.

Mr. Johnson was born in Arnett, Okla., on Oct. 5, 1938, to Cleo Johnson and Callie Branstetter Johnson. Mr. Johnson had been a resident of Fort Worth for more than 25 years and was employed by Gene Hill Equipment Co. as a gas pump technician. He had served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force, was a member of the American Legion in Fort Worth and a member of the First Baptist Church of Abilene.

Survivors include his mother, Callie LaMar of Abilene; one sister, Conyetta Gunn of Seattle, Wash.; two daughters, Debbie Dillard of McKinney and Christi Moore of Abilene, and four grandchildren.

Memorials may be sent to the American Diabetes Association, 8008 Slide Rd., Suite 12A, Lubbock, Tx. 79424.

James Waldrop

James Waldrop, 73, died Sunday at a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Memory Gardens Cemetery in Pampa, with Bishop Roger Roundy officiating and directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Mr. Waldrop was born in Brice, where he attended school. He moved to Abilene from San Antonio on June 28. He married Camilla Stinnett on Dec. 17, 1950. She preceded him in death on March 29. He was a veteran of the Army. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Mr. Waldrop was a retired machinist for the Cabot Corp. of Pampa where he worked for more than 30 years. He was a writer and wrote a book, <I>Spatanga Flat,<I> about growing up in the depression, and he wrote poems, short stories and articles.

Mr. Waldrop is survived by three daughters, Marilyn Sherrill of Azle, Cookie Smith of Abilene and Ann Ewing of San Antonio; one brother, Leonard Waldrop of Borger; two sisters, Ruby Duncan of Ennis and Della Kite of Amarillo, and seven grandchildren.

Barbara Ann Pentecost

Barbara Ann Pentecost, 56, died Monday at a local hospital.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Elmwood Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Curtis Cadenhead officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood Memorial Park. Visitiation will be Tuesday from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. in the funeral home.

Mrs. Pentecost was born Aug. 9, 1942, in Merkel and was employed with McMurry University and was also a member of the St. James United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Dalton T. Pentecost; two sons, Coy Bryan Pentecost and Wendall Scott Pentecost, all of Abilene; one daughter, Lisa Deshea Fellers of Ft. Worth; a brother, Dennis Ray Orsborn of Merkel; a sister, Velma Martin of Abilene, and two grandchildren.

Elizabeth Dugger Miller

Elizabeth Dugger Miller, 86, a former resident of Abilene, died Saturday in Corpus Christi.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elmwood Memorial Cemetery in Abilene.

Mrs. Miller was born Oct. 30, 1911, in Tennessee. She married Gene Miller on May 17, 1935, in Abilene. Mr. Miller preceded her in death in 1992. Elizabeth was a graduate of Abilene Christian Academy and a longtime member of Highland Church of Christ before moving to Waco. She was a homemaker and also worked many years as a waitress at Leslie's Chicken Shack.

Survivors include a daughter, Deanna Sliva of Irving; a son, the Rev. Charles Miller of Kingsville, five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two cousins and two nieces.

The family has designated the Alzheimer's Foundation for memorials.

Katie Myrtle Doyle

Katie Myrtle Doyle, 100, died Monday at a Haskell nursing home.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Rule Cemetery with John Greeson and Travis Boyd officiating, under the direction of McCauley-Robison Funeral Directors.

Mrs. Doyle was born Nov. 2, 1887, in Tarrant County. She married Warren Doyle in 1915 and he preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and had been a member of the Rule Church of Christ since 1960.

Survivors include one daughter, Rubye Norman of Rule; one sister, Winnie Sherrod of Aspermont; one grandson and two greatgrandchildren.

The family request memorials be made to the Craig Norman Memorial Scholarship Fund, care of FNB, P.O. Box 10, Rule, Tx. 79547.

Betty Ann Hollar

ROCHESTER - Betty Ann Hollar, 58, died Sunday at her home in Austin.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Rochester with Ed Buerkle officiating. Burial will follow in Willow Cemetery under the direction of Holden-McCauley Funeral directors.

Mrs. Hollar was born on Feb. 22, 1940, in Strawn. She married Kenneth E. Griffin, and he preceded her in death in December of 1956. She later married Lee E. Hollar on Nov. 11, 1965, and he preceded her in death on July 19, 1990. She attended Ranger Junior College and Columbia College and later graduated from Draughon's Business Colleges, Medical Assistant School. She worked in the medical field as a clinic and lab manager for about 30 years. She was a Baptist.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Earl Griffin, Jr. of Austin, and Clifton Lee Griffin of Panama City, Fla.; one daughter Kathryn Anne Warren of Mechanicsburg, Ill.; one brother, Tom R. Young of Washington, D.C.; three sisters, Frances Mitchell of Cresson, Brinda Kay Fowler of Garland and Linda Edlow of Lake Oswego, Ore.; eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The family requests memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, the Rochester Volunteer Fire Department or the Haskell Public Library.

Laura L. Trammell

EASTLAND - Laura L. Trammell, 89, of Eastland, died Sunday in Bedford.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Bakker Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Tom Goodman officiating. Burial will be in the Eastland Cemetery.

Mrs. Trammell was born June 27, 1909, in Weatherford. She grew up and went to school in Ranger and came to Eastland in 1932. She was a service assistant for Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. for many years, retiring in 1971. She married Leonard W. Trammell on Sept. 9, 1928, in Abilene. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Eastland.

She is survived by one son, Richard Byars of Granbury, two nieces, two nephews, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard, in 1959.

Sylvia F. Collins

EASTLAND - Sylvia F. Collins, 86, of Ranger, formerly of Eastland, died Monday in a Ranger nursing home.

Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Eastland Cemetery, under the direction of the Bakker Funeral Home of Eastland.

She was born on Nov. 17, 1911, in Eastland. She married Aaron Collins on July 6, 1933, in Eastland. A lifetime resident of Eastland, she was a homemaker and a member of the Ostrom St. Church of Christ.

She is survived by two sisters, Billie Dukes of Lake Leon and Lonell Hardin of Monahans, and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Aaron, in 1976.

Norman W. Owings

BLANKET - Norman W. Owings, 71, of Blanket, died Sunday.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the First Baptist Church of Blanket with the Rev. Gary Day officiating. Burial will follow in the Blanket Cemetery under the direction of Heartland Funeral Home of Early.

He was born May 16, 1927 in Aspermont. He married Barbara Haynes on Oct. 18, 1951 in Clovis, N.M. He had been a resident of Brown County since 1990 when he moved here from Lubbock. He was a Protestant and a member of the Blanket Lions Club. He worked as a self-employed contractor prior to this retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Owings of Blanket; four sons, Billy Owings of Early, Bobby Owings of Los Angeles, Calif., Darryl Owings of Lake Brownwood and Terry Owings of Atlanta, Ga.; two daughters, Nancy Martin of Levelland and Diane Thames of Electra; two sisters, Florene Conner of Lubbock and Geneva Thorton of Independence, Mo.; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Norman Ray Owings, two brothers and a sister.

Luestell B. Kincaid

Luestell B. Kincaid, 73, died Sunday at a local hospital. Services are pending with Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home.

Jewell "Casey" Lindsey Hodnett

Jewell "Casey" Lindsey Hodnett, 57, of Lake Thomas, died Saturday at a local hospital. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at 1012 W. 3rd.

Willie Brunette Jackson

SWEETWATER - Willie Brunette Jackson, 88, died Monday at Rolling Plains Hospital in Sweetwater. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Roscoe Cemetery.

Minnie McNulty

KNOX CITY - Minnie McNulty, 82, died Monday at a local nursing home. Services are pending with Smith Funeral Home in Knox City.

Angie Bridges

ROTAN - Angie Bridges, 89, died Monday afternoon at Abilene Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are pending at Weathersbee Funeral Home.
