Today's Obituaries (Sept. 12, 1998)

Harley Scifres

Harley E. Scifres, 80, died Thursday in a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Wayne Oglesby officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Mr. Scifres was born in Hamlin and graduated from Truscott High School. He attended college in Chicago. He married Winnie Wright in 1954 in Hamlin and worked as a pipe inspector for Baker Hughes Drilling Co. He moved to Abilene in 1985 from Odessa and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; one brother, Sammy Scifres of Norman, Ill.; two sisters, Lorene Capps of Dallas and Laverne Stokes of Carrollton; and several nieces and nephews.

Paije Maree Lemaster

Paije Maree Lemaster, infant, died Thursday in a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Paije was born in Abilene.

Survivors include her parents, David and Paula Lemaster of Abilene; one brother, Daniel Lemaster of Abilene; her grandparents, Laura and Joe Cortes, and Barbara and Joe Adams, all of Abilene, George Lemaster of Minnesota and Steve Smith of Kentucky; and many aunts and uncles.

Fannie Mae Orr Tiner George

Fannie Mae Orr Tiner George, 91, formerly of Memphis, Texas, died Friday in a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Fairview Cemetery in Memphis with the Rev. Neely Landrum officiating. Arrangements were made by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Mrs. George was born in Plaska and graduated from Memphis High School. She attended Clarendon Junior College. She owned and operated the Old Fashioned Freeze in Memphis until retiring and moved to Abilene in 1995 from Memphis. She taught the Victory Sunday School Class at Memphis First United Methodist Church and was the widow of Robert Tiner and Ted George.

Survivors include one son, Wayne Tiner of Abilene; one daughter, Cleva Mae Lower of San Angelo; two sisters, Ouida Brooks of Albuquerque, N.M., and LaVerne Heith of Tyler; eight grandchildren; and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Pearl Bowman

DENTON VALLEY -- Pearl C. Bowman, 77, died Thursday at her home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Bailey Funeral Home Chapel in Clyde with Richard Adkisson officiating. Burial will be in Kendrick Cemetery.

Mrs. Bowman was born in Cedar Gap and was a homemaker. She moved to Denton Valley in 1974 from Abilene. She was a member of Oak Street Church of Christ and was the widow of Lee Bowman, whom she married in 1938 in Cedar Gap.

Survivors include one son, Mac Bowman of Tuscola; one daughter, Betty Hardin of Clyde; two brothers, Wayne Baker of Seattle and Charles Spurgeon Baker of Sand Springs; one sister, Seretha Faye Idol of Tuscola; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; five step grandchildren; and eight step great-grandchildren.

Helen Hipchen Lawry

MINERAL WELLS -- Helen Hipchen Lawry, 76, of Abilene and formerly of Mineral Wells, died Thursday at her home.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Wichita Falls with the Rev. Harvey McMurry officiating, directed by Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Funeral Home.

Mrs. Lawry was born in Bradford, Pa., and was a homemaker. She moved to Abilene in 1995 from Mineral Wells. She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary and the Altar Society at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Mineral Wells, and was the widow of James Andrew Lawry, whom she married in 1946 in Bradford, Pa.

Survivors include one son, Andrew James Lawry of Abilene; three daughters, Bonnie Gray of Plano, Robyn Fields of Breckenridge and Amy Lawry Brown of Lewisville; one sister, Mildred May of Muleshoe; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be sent to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Mineral Wells, or Alzheimer's Association of West Central Texas or Hospice of the Big Country, both in Abilene.

Virginia Fowler

BEDFORD -- Virginia R. Fowler, 81, mother of an Abilene resident, died Thursday in Bedford.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. today in Moore Funeral Home Chapel in Arlington. Burial will be in Moore Memorial Gardens in Arlington.

Mrs. Fowler was born in Dallas and was a homemaker. She was a member of Arlington Woman's Club and First United Methodist Church and was the widow of Pat Fowler.

Survivors include one son, Steve Fowler of Houston; two daughters, Susan Miller of Colleyville and Betty Hukill of Abilene; and four grandchildren.

Jane Byrne Windrow

DALLAS -- Jane Byrne Windrow, 78, formerly of Abilene, died Monday in a local hospital.

Mass was said Thursday in Christ the King Catholic Church. Burial was in Grove Hill Memorial Park, directed by Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home.

Mrs. Windrow was born in Camaquay, Cuba, and graduated from Stripling High School in Fort Worth. She attended Ward Belmont College in Nashville, Tenn., and the University of Texas. She married Rollen Joe Windrow Jr. in 1946 in Washington, D.C. She worked in residential real estate for 25 years and moved to Dallas in 1962 from Abilene. She was a former member of Junior League of Abilene. She was a member of Junior League of Dallas, Junior League Garden Club, Comus Club, Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross and Christ the King Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, of Dallas; two daughters, Kathy Windrow Sroonan of Dallas and Marianne Windrow of Denver; one son, Rollen Joe Windrow III of Dallas; one sister, Mary Walker of Omaha, Neb.; and one brother, Dr. Bob Byrne of Washington, D.C.

Memorials may be sent to Episcopal Church of the Holy Cross or American Cancer Society.

Marvin Stephenson

MESQUITE -- Marvin L. Stephenson, 87, formerly of Abilene, died Thursday in a local care center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Turrentine-Jackson-Morrow Funeral Home Chapel in McKinney with Virgil Bentley and Roger Oglesby officiating. Burial will be in Ridgeview Memorial Park.

Mr. Stephenson was born in Fort Worth and married Cleo Woodley in 1934 in Whiteface. He was a former member of Minter Lane Church of Christ in Abilene. He was a member of Waterview Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife, of Mesquite; three sons, Marlin Stephenson of Elk Grove, Calif., Charles Stephenson of Richardson and Larry Stephenson of Denver; one sister, Karon Bradburn of Fort Worth; nine grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

The Rev. Auburn Spencer Neely

LIVINGSTON -- The Rev. Auburn Spencer Neely, 90, formerly of the Big Country, died Sept. 2 in Livingston after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Services were Sept. 4 in Goodrich First United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Frazier, Tom Price and Don Willis officiating. Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery, directed by Cochran Funeral Home.

Rev. Neely was born in Winters and graduated from Winters High School, and McMurry College in Abilene in 1935. He married Maxine Perry in 1936 in Abilene. He became a Methodist minister in 1936 and was a pastor for 12 years in the Huckaby and Foreston circuits, as well as in Bosqueville-Elmot and Hewitt. He then pastored churches in Lometa, Big Lake, Taft, Lockhart, Bronte, Corpus Christi, Pleasanton and Burnet for 26 years until retiring in 1974. He was a longtime dean of men at Mount Wesley, a conference camp in Kerrville. He formerly lived in Hughes Springs and was an associate minister at Texarkana First United Methodist Church for 10 years. He moved to Livingston in 1985 and pastored Goodrich First UMC for five years until leaving the pulpit due to ill health. He was a former school teacher and coach in Hewitt and Lometa, and was active in the Kiwanis, Lions and Rotary clubs.

Survivors include his wife, of Livingston; one son, Stanley C. Neely of Norman, Okla.; one daughter, Linda Neely Walker of Livingston; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Amos Carlisle

BROWNWOOD -- Amos Carlisle, 63, died Thursday in a local hospital after a sudden illness.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. today in Eastlawn Memorial Park with the Rev. Bill Swindler officiating, directed by Heartland Funeral Home of Early.

Mr. Carlisle was born in Stonewall County and lived in Brown County most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army and worked in the tree service business for many years. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include his wife, Juanelle Gober Carlisle of Brownwood; eight sons, Gerald Steele, James Steele, Ambers Steele and Wesley Carlisle, all of Brownwood, Jimmy Carlisle of West Virginia, Richard Carlisle and Amos Carlisle Jr., both of Fort Worth, and Randy Carlisle of Iowa Park; two daughters, Joyce Lewis of Fort Worth and Nelda Peel of Brownwood; two brothers, Cecil Carlisle of Evant and Layton Carlisle of Fort Worth; one sister, Odessa Henry of Comanche; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Wilbur Ouellette

Wilbur Ouellette, 81, died Friday in a local hospital. Services are pending with Elmwood Funeral Home, 5750 U.S. Hwy 277 South.

Ardelia Neblett

BROWNWOOD -- Ardelia Neblett, 88, died Wednesday in a local hospital. Services are pending with Heartland Funeral Home of Early.

William Edward 'Bill' Johnston

ODESSA -- William Edward "Bill" Johnston, 68, relative of several Abilene residents, died Thursday in a local hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Sixth & Jackson Church of Christ, directed by Hubbard Kelly Funeral Home.

Mary Jane Powell

SNYDER -- Mary Jane Powell, 75, died Friday in a local hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel.

Kenneth Earl Chancellor

CISCO -- Kenneth Earl Chancellor, 38, died Wednesday at his home. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Nimrod Cemetery, directed by Kimbrough Funeral Home.

Clint Wilson Lewis

SWEETWATER -- Clint Wilson Lewis, 76, died Friday in a local hospital. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday in McCoy Funeral Home Chapel of Memories.

Fayne McKelleb

TUSCOLA -- Fayne A. McKelleb, 89, died Friday in a Winters nursing home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Tuscola First Baptist Church, directed by Fry-Bartlett Funeral Home.

Nick Grba

GOLDTHWAITE -- Nick Grba died Wednesday in Goldthwaite. Services will be at 2 p.m. today in Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel.
