Marie Costin
Marie Costin, 71, died Thursday at her home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral
Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with the Rev. Mike Woodard
officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Costin was born in Crosbyton, where she graduated from
high school in 1944. She worked at Citizens National Bank in Lubbock
for three years. She married H.B. "Casey" Costin in
1952 in Lubbock and was a homemaker. She was employed by Little
Rock National Bank in Little Rock, Ark. before moving to Abilene
in 1964. She was a member of Southwest Park Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, of Abilene; one son, Rush Edward
Costin of Abilene; two daughters, Pamela Kingery of Abilene and
Casey Rae Boykin of New Jersey; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be sent to West Texas Rehabilitation Center,
4601 Hartford, Abilene 79605.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Ruby Hicks Moore
Ruby Hicks Moore, 78, died Wednesday at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Elliott-Hamil Funeral
Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy 277 South, with the Rev. K.R.
White officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood Memorial Park.
Mrs. Moore was born in Paris, Texas, where she attended school,
and moved to Abilene in 1951. She was a domestic worker for Dr.
and Mrs. William P. Gollihar for 20 years. She was a member of
Macedonia Baptist Church and was the widow of Arthur Moore, whom
she married in 1939 in Paris, Texas.
Survivors include one son, Donald Moore of Abilene; two sisters,
Lela Wortham of Paris, Texas, and Opal Brown of Longview; six
grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. today in the funeral home.
Fleeta Scott
Fleeta M. Scott, 85, died Thursday in a local care center.
The body will be cremated and no services are planned. Arrangements
were made by Abilene Funeral Home, 3349 N. 12th.
Mrs. Scott was born in Oklahoma City and was a self-employed
photographer. She was a member of Unity Church of Christianity.
Survivors include her husband, Harry G. Scott of Abilene.
Dr. Euell Porter
WACO - Dr. Edwin Euell Porter, 87, formerly of Abilene, died
Wednesday in a local retirement center.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday in Seventh and James
Baptist Church with Dr. Raymond Bailey officiating. Graveside
services will be at 3:30 p.m. in Bryan City Cemetery in Bryan,
directed by Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Funeral Home.
Dr. Porter was born in Franklin and graduated from Calvert
High School in 1929 and Hardin-Simmons University in 1933. He
also earned master's degrees from the University of Texas and
Texas A&M University. He received an honorary doctorate of
music degree from Howard Payne College in 1954 and an honorary
doctorate of humanities degree from HSU in 1980. He taught at
Hearne High School, Bryan High School, Sam Houston State University
in Huntsville and HSU. He started at Baylor University as a professor
of church and choral music in 1955 and retired in 1980. He then
became Baylor's special musical activities director. Working through
the Continuing Education Department, he organized the school's
senior adult choir and was named conductor emeritus in 1994. He
was an interim music minister at churches throughout Texas from
1980-94 and also organized church choir retreats.
He was presented with the Texas Baptist Elder Statesman Award
in 1994. He was a charter member of the Texas Music Educators
and Texas Baptist Music associations, and was a member of National
Music Educators Association, National Association of Teachers
of Singing, Texas Choral Directors Association, American Choral
Director Association, Waco Scottish Rite Bodies and George N.
Denton Lodge 24 in Waco. He also was a member of Seventh and James
Baptist Church, where he resigned as music minister in 1980. He
was the widower of Christine Dennis Porter, whom he married in
1936.
Survivors include two nephews and two nieces; five great-nephews
and three great-nieces; four great-great-nephews; and two great-great-great-nephews
and one great-great-great-niece.
Memorials may be sent to Euell and Christine Porter Scholarship
Fund or Euell Porter Choral Rehearsal Hall, both at Baylor University
in Waco; or Euell Porter Music Scholarship Fund at Hardin-Simmons
University in Abilene.
David Dewey Keeney
BELLA VISTA, Ark. - David Dewey Keeney, 73, father of two Abilene
residents, died Monday at his home.
Services were Thursday in Hummelstown, Pa. Local arrangements
were made by Bella Vista Funeral Home.
Mr. Keeney was born in Allentown, Pa., and served in World
War II, Korea and Vietnam. He was in the U.S. Air Force for 22
years before retiring as a master sergeant. He moved to Bella
Vista in 1997 from Summerville, S.C., and was a member of the
Church of Christ.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy Keeney of Bella Vista; two
sons, David A. Keeney of Ellicott City, Md., and Gary S. Keeney
of Abilene; two daughters, Phyliss D. Booth of Cherokee Village,
Ark., and Patti D. McCaghren of Abilene; one sister, Ruth M. Snyder
of Springville, N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Hazel Leverton
HAWLEY - Hazel Leverton, 88, died Wednesday in Anson.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Hawley First Baptist
Church with the Revs. Don Myers and Bill Dickson officiating.
Burial will be in Hawley Cemetery, directed by Lawrence-Adams
Funeral Home of Anson.
Mrs. Leverton was born in Grayson County and grew up in Slidell.
She married John L. Leverton in 1938 in Slidell and was a homemaker.
She moved to Hawley in 1955 and worked in the Hawley school cafeteria
for 11-1/2 years. She was a member of First Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, of Hawley; one son, Johnney
Roy Leverton of Abilene; one brother, I.L. Stubblefield of Abilene;
one sister, Dorothy Stubblefield of San Angelo; six grandchildren;
10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Marion Randolph Calfee
SWEETWATER - Marion Randolph Calfee, 85, died Thursday in a
local hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in First Christian Church
with the Rev. Zoe Renfro officiating. Burial will be in I.O.O.F.
Cemetery in Abilene, directed by McCoy Funeral Home.
Mr. Calfee was born in Stamford and graduated from Abilene
High School in 1930 and Texas A&M University in 1935. He married
Vora Sloan in 1938 in Abilene and worked as a civil engineer for
the U.S. Government for 30 years until retiring. He moved to Sweetwater
in 1973 and was a member of First Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Sweetwater; two sisters, Dorothy
Calfee and Maxine Landers, both of Abilene; and several nieces
and nephews.
Lera Starnes Simpson
COLEMAN - Lera Starnes Simpson, 79, of Arlington and formerly
of Coleman, died Thursday in an Arlington nursing home.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Coleman
Cemetery pavilion with the Rev. Reed Justus officiating, directed
by Stevens Funeral Home.
Mrs. Simpson was born in Orange and graduated from Coleman
High School. She and her husband owned and operated Simpson Turkey
Hatchery in Coleman for many years. She moved to Arlington in
1971 and worked as a bookkeeper. She was a Baptist and was the
widow of W.H. "Buddy" Simpson, whom she married in 1939
in Coleman.
Survivors include one son, Don W. Simpson of Livingston; one
daughter, Jean Coulter of Arlington; one brother, Don Starnes
of Coleman; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be sent to American Cancer Society.
Mary Leona Burnham
ROTAN - Mary Leona Burnham, 81, lifelong area resident, died
Wednesday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Weathersbee Funeral
Home Chapel with the Rev. Werth Mayes officiating. Burial will
be in Spring Creek Cemetery near Avoca.
Mrs. Burnham was born in Fisher County and was a homemaker.
She was a member of Order of the Eastern Star and Calvary Baptist
Church and was the widow of Frank Burnham, whom she married in
1969 in Roby.
Survivors include four sons, Mickey Martin of Tow, James Tankersley
of Sweetwater and Jackie Tankersley of Rotan and Clu Burnham of
Stamford; two daughters, Barbara Hardin of Rotan and Doris Bullock
of Tow; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Travis King
BROWNWOOD - Travis B. King, 58, died Thursday in a local hospital.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Salt Creek Baptist
Church with the Rev. Alan Wallace and Dr. Art Allen officiating.
Burial will be in Salt Creek Cemetery, directed by Heartland Funeral
Home of Early.
Mr. King was born in Rusk and married Margie Upchurch in 1964
in Crandell. He worked as a truck driver and moved to Brownwood
in 1983 from Dallas. He attended Southside Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, of Brownwood; one son, James King
of Brownwood; three daughters, Diane King, Kathy Clifton and Marie
Reyes, all of Brownwood; one brother, Troy B. King of Rusk; two
sisters, Flora Mae Flores of Rusk and Ruby Nell Waggoner of Pasadena;
and seven grandchildren.

MERKEL - Bernice Lewis Bagby, 77, died Thursday in an Abilene
hospital. Services are pending with Starbuck Funeral Home.
