HSU board of trustees chairman dies

George Robert "Bob" Bryan, chairman of the board of trustees at Hardin-Simmons University, died in Dallas Thursday after a lengthy illness.

Funeral services are pending at Restland Funeral Home in Dallas.

Bryan, a 1967 graduate of Hardin-Simmons, was a past president of Enserch Energy Services Inc. and lived in Dallas.

A 1963 graduate of Cooper High School, Bryan served two years as a naval officer before joining Lone Star Gas in 1969.

His mother, Frances Bryan, still lives in Abilene, and his father, I.G. Bryan, is deceased.

Bryan attended the board of trustees meeting at Hardin-Simmons in August although he was in ill health at the time, suffering from cancer, said Dr. W. Craig Turner, executive vice president and chief academic officer at the university.

His health had taken a turn for the worse recently, Turner said.

"He had really deteriorated the last two weeks," Turner said.

Bryan served on the board of trustees for the past nine years.

"Mr. Bryan was an outstanding leader, a thoughtful Christian gentleman and a fine human being," said HSU President Dr. Lanny Hall. "As a trustee, he was known for his financial expertise, his strong decision-making ability and his sense of humor."
