Today's Obituaries (Oct. 25, 1998)

William Thompson

William Thompson, 72, died Saturday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at New Light Baptist Church with the Revs. Leo Scott and L.W. Hutchinson officiating, assisted by the Rev. Ozell McBride. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, directed by Curtis-Starks Funeral Home, 542 E.N. 7th.

Mr. Thompson was born in Marlin and worked at Mrs. Baird's Bakery for many years. He married Mary Opal Williams in 1954.

Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; one son, William Thompson Jr. of Dallas; six sisters, five of Marlin and Floydell Jones of Snyder; five brothers, four from Marlin and one from Snyder; and eight grandchildren.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6-7 p.m. Monday.

George Stewart

George Stewart, 74, died Oct. 18 at a local hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Miracle Independent Baptist Church with the Rev. W.D. Crane officiating. Burial will be in Masonic Cemetery, directed by Curtis-Starks Funeral Home, 542 E.N. 7th.

Mr. Stewart was born in Ozan, Ark., where he spent his young life. He worked in the oil fields and for Southern Pacific Railroad. He moved to the San Luis Obispo, Calif., area in 1951 and to Abilene in 1970, where he worked for Gooch Packing, Plains Machinery and Hendrick Hospital. He was a member of Miracle Independent Baptist Church, where he was a deacon. He was a member of numerous singing groups in California and Abilene. He married Eddie Ruth Hester in 1948. He married Patricia Mack in 1989.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia, of Abilene; two sons, George Stewart Jr. of Riverside, Calif., and Edgar Lee Stewart of Riverdale, Ga.; four daughters, Gloria Brown and Alice Williams, both of Santa Maria, Calif., Linda Stewart of Abilene and Teena Gowdy of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada; 14 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives.

The family will be at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. today.

William Franklin 'Bill' Moreland

ANSON -- William Franklin "Bill" Moreland, 72, died Friday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 4 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Loren Gardner officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery, directed by Lawrence-Adams Funeral Home.

Mr. Moreland was born in Donley County and graduated from Clarendon High School in 1943. He attended Clarendon Junior College and graduated from Midwestern State University in 1951. He moved to Anson from Abilene in 1970 and was a self-employed geologist. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and was a member of the Geological and Palazoic Associations and of First United Methodist Church. He married Sylvia Fox in 1947 in Clarendon.

Survivors include his wife, of Anson; two sons, Mike Moreland of Abilene and Jack Moreland of Monahans; two daughters, Gale Pritchard of New Orleans, La., and Marsha Moreland of Fort Phantom; four grandchildren and one stepgranddaughter.

Letha Hazel Nitsch

WINTERS -- Letha Hazel Nitsch, 84, of Midland and formerly of Winters, died Friday at a Midland nursing home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Winters Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tony King officiating. Burial will be in Crews Cemetery.

Mrs. Nitsch was born in Ingram and had lived in Winters for many years. She worked at the Winters school cafeteria for several years. She left Winters in the mid-'60s and lived in Ballinger and Abilene before moving to Midland in 1997. She was a member of 8th Street Baptist Church in Ballinger. She married Edward Joe Nitsch in 1932 in Abilene; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include one daughter, Cecile Nitsch of Midland; four sisters, D'Nita Lane and Wanda Foster, both of Abilene, Jerry Williams of Sweetwater and Joy Wheat of San Angelo; and two grandsons.

The family will be at the funeral home at 6 p.m. today.

Ruth Dorene Brooks

STAMFORD -- Ruth Dorene Brooks, 77, died Friday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Kinney Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Brigham officiating. Burial will be in Willow Cemetery in Haskell.

Mrs. Brooks was born in Cameron and moved to Stamford from Haskell in 1966. She married Noel Nicholas Brooks in 1943 in Rochester; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include five sons, Earnest Brooks and Roy Brooks, both of Abilene, James Brooks of Hearne and Audie Brooks and Kenneth Brooks, both of Stamford; three daughters, Jonell Bridges of Stamford, Reta Allcock of Abilene and Dorothy Taylor of Bridgeport; four brothers, Alvie Reynolds of Odessa, John Reynolds of Graham, Jim Reynolds of Corsicana and Charles Reynolds of Bridgeport; 13 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Dr. Allen Fain

DUNCANVILLE -- Dr. Allen M. Fain, 76, a longtime crusader for health care for the elderly, died Friday after a long illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church.

Dr. Fain was born in Abilene and was a veteran of the Army Air Corps. He graduated from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical College and moved to Duncanville in 1953. He established Fain Medical-Surgical Clinic and was a partner in construction of Colonial Acres Geriatric Hospital and Skilled Nursing Center. He helped establish the FLAME Corporation and became a founder and first president of the Duncanville Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed city health officer in 1954 and Dallas County health officer and director for the Texas Department of Health in 1976. He was named director of Statewide Medical Review for the Texas Medical Foundation and, in 1988, national medical director of the American Medical Peer Review Association.

Survivors include his wife, Lourene of Dallas; three sons, Mickey Fain of Boulder, Colo., Dr. Ricky Fain of DeSoto and Dr. Jerry Fain of Austin; one sister, Wanda (Mrs. Fred) Hughes of Abilene; and five grandchildren.

Donnie Ray Upshaw

ROTAN -- Donnie Ray Upshaw, 45, of Fort Worth and formerly of Fisher County, died Friday at a Fort Worth hospital.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today in Roby Cemetery with the Rev. L.D. Parks officiating, directed by Weathersbee Funeral Home.

Mr. Upshaw was born in Sweetwater and had lived in Fort Worth for 19 years. He was a remodeling contractor and a Marine Corps veteran. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Colorado City.

Survivors include two brothers, Roger Upshaw of Colorado City and Terry Upshaw of Lawn; a grandmother, Bessie Jones of Kermit; and several nieces and nephews.

Edwin Moss

BROWNWOOD -- Edwin M. Moss, 76, died Saturday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Early First Baptist Church with the Revs. Allen Cartwright, Lowell Skaggs and Jess Smith officiating. Burial will be in Eastlawn Memorial Park, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Mr. Moss was born in Valley View and was a retired plant foreman for Texas Feathers. He was an Army veteran of World War II and had lived in Brownwood since 1942. He was a member of Early First Baptist Church. He married Virginia Lancaster in 1943 in Brownwood.

Survivors include his wife, of Brownwood; one son, James Moss of Early; one sister, Leta Belle Turner of Gainesville; two granddaughters and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Med Care Hospice or Early First Baptist Church Activity Center Fund.

Vera Gertrude Waldrep

BROWNWOOD -- Vera Gertrude Waldrep, 87, of May died Friday at a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Greenleaf Cemetery, directed by Davis-Morris Funeral Home.

Mrs. Waldrep was born in Eastland County and had lived in Brownwood and Eastland County most of her life. She was a homemaker and a member of May Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sisters, Ola Locktedt of Gonzales, Edith Baker Taylor of Brownwood and Naomi Cain of May; and eight nieces and nephews.

Rossie Richburg

SWEETWATER -- Rossie Richburg, 85, died Tuesay at a local care center. Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church, directed by Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Alice Marie Boyd Forcha

BRECKENRIDGE -- Alice Marie Boyd Forcha, 86, died Saturday at a local hospital. Services are pending with Melton Funeral Home.

Emil Orsak Sr.

BIG SPRING -- Emil Orsak Sr., 75, died Friday. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Jose 'Joe' Garfias Sr.

BIG SPRING -- Jose N. "Joe" Garfias Sr., 83, died Friday. Rosary will be said at 7 p.m. Monday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home Chapel. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Joel Flores

Joel Flores, 49, of Abilene died Saturday at a local hospital. Services are pending with Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 5701 Hwy. 277 South.

Addie Carroll

COLORADO CITY -- Addie Carroll, 86, died Saturday at a Houston hospital. Services are pending with Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.

Mary Garner

RULE -- Mary Garner, 89, died Saturday at a Haskell nursing home. Services are pending with Holden-McCauley Funeral Directors.

Dr. George Dillon

BIG SPRING -- Dr. George Dillon, 88, died Saturday at a local hospital. Services are pending with Myers & Smith Funeral Home.

Gerald Sims

BROWNWOOD -- Services for Gerald L. Sims, 75, are pending with Heartland Funeral Home of Early.
