Today's Obituaries (Nov. 10, 1998)

Dr. Grady Wiggins

Dr. Grady L. Wiggins, 82, a lifelong resident of the Abilene area, died Saturday at a local nursing home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Memories, 542 Hickory, with the Rev. Philip Spitzbergen officiating. Burial will be in Potosi Cemetery.

Dr. Wiggins was born near the Iberis community and attended school in Iberis and Wylie. He was valedictorian of the first graduating class of Wylie High School in 1935. He attended McMurry College and graduated from Texas Chiropractic College in 1951. He had a chiropractic practice in Abilene for more than 45 years. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II and a member of Word of Life Church. He married Claudie B. Lanham in 1944 in Abilene.

Survivors include his wife, of Abilene; two sons, Ronnie Wiggins and Kenneth Wiggins, both of Abilene; one daughter, Christy Wiggins of Weatherford; three brothers, Lamar L. Wiggins of Tuscola and W.K. Wiggins Sr. and Fowler Wiggins, both of Abilene; one sister, Lula Wiggins of Waco; three grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Word of Life Church, 3501 Chimney Rock, Abilene 79606.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7-8 p.m. today.

Phillip Ray Hain

Phillip Ray Hain, 64, of Abilene died Monday at a local hospital.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in I.O.O.F. Cemetery with the Rev. Don Woods officiating, directed by Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Mr. Hain was born in Northumberland, Pa., and had lived in Abilene since 1975. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1970 and was a custodian with the Abilene Independent School District for 10 years. He was a member of Bible Chapel and a foster grandparent at Abilene Day Nursery.

Survivors include one son, Rick Hain of Pennsylvania; one daughter, Sharon Hain Long of Pennsylvania; one brother, Leroy Hain of Pennsylvania; and two grandchildren.

Arvel Andrew Wilson Sr.

Arvel Andrew Wilson Sr., 79, of Tye died Monday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home Chapel of Faith, 5701 U.S. Hwy. 277 South, with the Rev. Donald Valenta officiating. Burial will Masonic rites will be in Elliott-Hamil Garden of Memories.

Mr. Wilson was born in Henrietta and attended school there and in Iowa Park. He worked for Continental Oil Co. for 35 years and moved to Abilene from Ackerly in 1980. He attended Caps Baptist Church and was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Knox City. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He married Lois Pauline Jones in 1939 in Wichita Falls.

Survivors include his wife, of Tye; two sons, Arvel A. Wilson Jr. of Lubbock and James L. Wilson of Electra; one daughter, Kittie Wright of Abilene; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Shriners Burn Institute, 610 Texas Ave., Galveston TX 77550.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today.

Terry Allen Kennedy

MOUNT WASHINGTON, Ky. - Terry Allen Kennedy, 50, of Hillview, Ky., died Saturday at a Louisville, Ky., hospice.

Services will be today at McFarland-Troutman Funeral Home with David Hastings officiating. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens.

Mr. Kennedy grew up in Abilene and was a Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War. He was formerly employed by Ford Motor Co.-Fern Valley Road and was a member of Fairdale Masonic Lodge 942 and Shriners. He was the widower of Caryn Kennedy.

Survivors include one son, Terry Kennedy Jr. of Hillview; one stepdaughter, Francine Powell of Shepherdsville, Ky.; his mother, Lena Farr of Abilene; two brothers, Marlin Lloyd Kennedy of Abilene and Royce Kennedy of Louisville; one sister, Dorothy Goodrum of Warner Robins, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Louisville.

Thomas Joshua West

SEMINOLE - Thomas Joshua West, 17, died Sunday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 3 p.m. today at Seminole Junior High Auditorium with James Smith officiating, assisted by James Satterwhite. Burial will be in Gaines County Memorial Cemetery North, directed by Boyer Funeral Home.

Mr. West was born in Ballinger and moved to Seminole from Snyder four years ago. He was a member of Westside Church of Christ and helped organize the Bible Story Club at Seminole High School, where he was a junior. He was a member of 4-H.

Survivors include his parents, Nathan and Kay West of Seminole; grandmothers Cleo Clare of Snyder and Nelta Jean West of Abilene; one brother, Michael Ray Thompson of Abilene; one sister, Regina Renace Fenwick of Winters; and three nephews.

Cleve Gandy

BRECKENRIDGE - Cleve Gandy, 83, died Sunday at his home.

Services will be at 11 a.m. today at First Baptist Church with Jim Cox and the Revs. Danny Martin and Cecil Harper officiating. Burial will be in Breckenridge Cemetery, directed by Melton Funeral Home.

Mr. Gandy was born in Breckenridge, where he was a longtime resident. He was a pumper for Pardue Oil and an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Baptist church, Breckenridge Masonic Lodge 492, Breckenridge Elks Lodge 1480 and the American Legion. He married Dena Slaughter in 1944 in Fort Riley, Kan.

Survivors include his wife, of Breckenridge; one daughter, Donna Rogers of Brady; one son, Garland Gandy of Midland; and seven grandchildren. Memorials to Meals on Wheels may be left at the funeral home.

Anna Lee Osborne

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Anna Lee "Aunt Annie" Osborne, 97, formerly of Abilene, died Friday at a local hospital.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Nov. 21 at Monterey Baptist Church with the Rev. Fred MacDonald officiating, directed by French Mortuary-Lomas Blvd. Chapel.

Mrs. Osborne was born in Tulia and moved to McDonald, N.M., in 1912. She studied and practiced nursing in Texas until moving to California in 1929. She was head maternity nurse at Maywood Memorial Hospital in California until retiring in 1965. She moved to Albuquerque from Hemet, Calif., in 1990. She was a member of Monterey Baptist Church. She married H. Bryan Osborne in 1929 in Hereford; he preceded her in death.

Survivors include one son, Daniel Osborne of San Francisco, Calif.; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives, including many in the Abilene area.

Clois Jones

COLEMAN - Clois F. Jones, 82, died Sunday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel with James Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Coleman Cemetery.

Mr. Jones was born in Eastland County and grew up in Eastland and Coleman counties, attending school in Eastland. He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He lived in Odessa for 40 years, where he was an auto mechanic for Jack Arledge Olds and Cadillac. He returned to Coleman in 1985 and was a member of Elm Street Church of Christ, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He married Winnie Perkins in 1946 in Coleman.

Survivors include his wife, of Coleman; one daughter, Shirley Ann Tucker of Odessa; two brothers, Lavell Jones of Santa Anna and Donald Jones of Coleman; two grandsons, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Elm Street Church of Christ, 216 W. Elm, Coleman 76834; or Ladies Auxiliary of Coleman County Medical Center, 310 S. Pecos, Coleman 76834.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. today.

Cindy Arlene Dempsey

BROWNWOOD - Cindy Arlene Dempsey, 42, died Monday at a local hospital.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Paul McClung officiating. Burial will be in Coleman Cemetery.

Mrs. Dempsey was born in Brownwood, where she lived all her life. She was a member of Stewart Street Church of Christ and was a teacher's aide at Brownwood High School. She married Charles Dempsey in 1976 in Brownwood.

Survivors include her husband, of Brownwood; one son, Grady Ray Dempsey of Brownwood; one daughter, Sarah Lee Dempsey of Brownwood; her father, Jodie Tomlinson of Brownwood; one brother, Tommie Joe Tomlinson of Ozona; one sister, Dixie Wood of Ballinger; and numerous other relatives.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7-9 p.m. today and Wednesday.

Delphine Lydia Summers

MUNDAY - Delphine Lydia Summers, 79, died Sunday at a Knox City hospital.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Saint Joseph's Catholic Cemetery in Rhineland with the Rev. Kevin Fagan officiating, directed by McCauley-Smith Funeral Home.

Mrs. Summers was born in Rhineland and was an insurance company secretary. She was a member of Saint Joseph's Catholic Church.

Survivors include one son, Bobby Summers of Colleyville; one sister, Madeline Speer; two brothers, Clem Wilde of Atwater, Calif., and John Ed Wilde of Lubbock; and one granddaughter.

Otha Mildred McCay

THROCKMORTON - Otha Mildred McCay, 82, died Monday at a Temple care center.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Throckmorton Cemetery with the Rev. Jimmy Rogers officiating, directed by Merriman-Archer Funeral Home.

Mrs. McCay was born in Throckmorton and graduated from St. Joseph's Hospital School of Nursing. She was an Army Nurse Corps veteran of World War II and had lived in Temple since 1946. She was a head nurse for the Veterans Administration for 22 years. She was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1820 and a charter member of the Texas Gould Society. She was a Baptist and a retired registered nurse.

Survivors include one nephew, Theron Tharp of Throckmorton; and numerous great-nieces and -nephews.

H.A. Williams

SNYDER - H.A. Williams, 81, of Andrews died Saturday at a Midland hospital after a lengthy illness. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel.

Arla Akin

SWEETWATER - Arla F. Akin, 88, died Saturday at a local hospital. The body was cremated. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. today at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Dianna Lynn Williams

SNYDER - Dianna Lynn Williams, 48, died Saturday at a Lubbock hospital after a brief illness. Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home Chapel.

Beulah Roberta Stewart

DE LEON - Beulah Roberta Stewart, 77, of Killeen died Sunday in Killeen. Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Nowlin Funeral Home Chapel.

Barbara Vandagriff

STEPHENVILLE - Barbara R. Vandagriff, 60, died Monday in Stephenville. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lacy Funeral Home Chapel. The family will be at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. today.

Delmar Stapp

GOLDTHWAITE - Delmar E. Stapp, 69, died Monday at a local nursing home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Stacy-Wilkins Funeral Home Chapel. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. in Camp Wood Cemetery in Camp Wood.

Dean Gaines

COMANCHE - Dean Gaines, 65, died Monday at a Temple hospital. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today in Sardis Cemetery in Comanche County, directed by Comanche Funeral Home.

Ethel Wade Mundell

BIG SPRING - Ethel Wade Mundell, 96, of Fort Worth and formerly of Knott, died Monday in Fort Worth. Services are pending with Nalley-Pickle & Welch Funeral Home.

Myrtle Elsie Gilliam

Myrtle Elsie Gilliam, 95, of Abilene died Monday at a local hospital. Services are pending with Elliott-Hamil Funeral Home, 542 Hickory.

Rita Glover
