Cheers for Hundley

Hooray for Abilene ISD's Charles Hundley! His March 8 guest column on Cal Thomas was right on the money.

There is a saying: "He's so mean he thought Old Yeller had it coming." Thomas fits this bill. If I want the truth, I read Molly Ivins.

Science fair help

In February, I sent out 250 surveys to residences in Abilene for my science fair project. Several were returned to me because they were sent to apartment complexes, and I did not know apartment numbers. Ninety-nine households responded to my survey.

I would like to thank those who took the time to answer the survey and return it to me. I appreciate your help in this project because it would not have been successful without your response. I am excited to say I won first prize in both the Jim Ned Science Fair and the Abilene Science Fair sponsored by the Junior League.

I would like to thank the Junior League for its sponsorship. I know it took a lot of money and many hours of work to have a successful science fair. I would also like to thank the Abilene Reporter-News for its sponsorship. I hope someone will take over the sponsorship of this event for students in future years.

I would also like to thank the judges for using their expertise in judging this contest.

For those who wanted a copy of my final report, they will be mailed shortly. I have been involved in our basketball team's playoffs and have not had a chance to mail those yet.

Being good followers

Where to what next? As Mark Twain once asked, "What has gone wrong with the damned human race?"

Many people spend time with TV, if balanced with reading that is necessary -- whether we read for ourselves or more importantly for our youth. Our schools, the family units, the churches and all levels of government affect us greatly.

It has been estimated that of our waking time, 50 percent is being spent listening, 25 percent talking, 15 percent reading and 10 percent writing. English, other languages and various cultures make a rainbow of life.

We need to support the president of the United States as well as all our leaders. We can all be good followers and citizens if we choose. Crime, drugs, all sins rest on our choices fighting the irony of fate. We step forward, regress and continue to strive for progress, happiness, love and freedom.

"To each his own" -- charity begins at home, and then we can help others to help themselves. Education is a never-ending process, and everyone must continue learning. "Somewhere in Time," we'll conquer diseases and disasters. Friendships for all, as Dr. Martin L. King Jr. stated, "I've been to the mountain top."

Freedom, peace and love will endure. Surely we must think logically, question and place our No. 1 priority on our greatest resource -- the youth of the world.
