Endorsing Batts

Abilene school board candidate Yvonne Batts is well known in Abilene as an industrious and efficient businesswoman, as well as an active volunteer in youth work. Co-owner and vice president of Batts Communications, she serves on the boards of Abilene Business Council, Abilene Chamber of Commerce and Goodwill Industries. As comptroller of her business and earlier as vice president of NationsBank and manager for Southwestern Bell, she has demonstrated considerable financial expertise, organizational ability and leadership.

On the board of Abilene Education Council and a member of the AISD Consultation Committee, Yvonne also teaches young people in the Junior Achievement and Texas Scholars programs. She is a positive role model who works well with others to make Abilene a better community.

Yvonne is energetic, efficient, responsible and dependable. A woman of true character and traditional American values, she is genuinely interested in helping create the best possible environment in Abilene for the education of our youth.

I wholeheartedly endorse Yvonne Batts for place 4 on the Abilene school board.

U.N. withdrawal

For those who don't remember, a few weeks back the United States was on the brink of war with Iraq. No settlement was in sight, both parties seemed locked in their position, and it looked as though American bloodshed was eminent, a scary prospect in a town like Abilene with a large military population.

Fortunately, the crisis was quelled without a costly military action. Dollars and, more importantly, American lives were saved.

The person responsible for thwarting this unappealing situation was Koffe Anon, Secretary General of the United Nations.

It would appear proper to bear this in mind the next time Republican congressional candidate Rudy Izzard espouses xenophobic rhetoric by calling for a U.S. withdraw from the United Nations.

Wolfe's credentials

I would like to voice my support for Charlie Wolfe, school board, place 5. I have known Charlie for more than 11 years and believe he is the unequivocal best choice for this crucial position.

With the technological advances our children will face in the near future, who better than a CPA and computer professional to lead our children into the 21st century?

I have witnessed first hand the dedication and hard work Charlie has done while transforming his small, local software company into a major national software provider. His ability and willingness to tackle any problem are always evident.

Abilene would be fortunate to have such a qualified and caring individual on the school board, and I hope you will join me in voting for our children by supporting Charlie Wolfe.

Too much garbage

I think our city is becoming polluted by garbage. People are wasting good stuff. They need to reuse and recycle their trash. It will save our natural resources.

Our garbage dump is getting large. The people need to save our city, make it nice to look at for me and to visit. The next reason we need to pick up trash is because we need to keep our city beautiful.

I think you should listen to me.
