Prairie Dog booster

Abilene is a wonderful town, but one thing aggravates me. That is when people say there is nothing to do. Well, I have a small comment to make: Try an Abilene Prairie Dogs game.

Have you ever been out there? It is a wonderful place to be.

The games don't start until 7 p.m., so that gives you time to grab a quick meal and feed the kids. All of the seats at Crutcher Scott Field are wonderful. There are no bad seats. There are no alcoholic sales, so it is OK for the kids to run around. In fact, most of the kids spend time in the mini-arcade and the wheel of fortune.

If you're worried about the kids or yourself getting hit by a ball, the whole area behind the plate has a net over it so there is a safe place for everyone with small kids. There are between-inning games that add variety.

Ticket prices are very reasonable. For about $6 you can either buy a movie ticket or a ticket for the Prairie Dogs.

Unlike the professional baseball teams where the players are so far away from their fans, the Prairie Dogs are not like that. In fact, the players stand by the right field gate and will autograph anything a kid or adult wants them to sign. These players are so wonderful to their fans. They even will stand by the dugout after a game and talk to the kids that are waiting there for them.

This is what baseball is all about. So I just want to ask all the people in Abilene to go see a Prairie Dogs game. Then you will realize there really is something to do in Abilene.

A vote for Izzard

Rudy Izzard has given us one big reason to vote for him. He has secured a seat on the National Security Committee -- the committee in Congress that is responsible for overseeing all military bases (like our very own Dyess).

Like it or not, there will be another round (or two) of base closures. Having a member of the majority party on the National Security Committee is crucial for the future of Dyess AFB and of Abilene.

As the daughter of a veteran, I understand just how important a role our military plays in this country. I know that Rudy Izzard will work to protect the interests of our national security, our American servicemen and our veterans.

NOTE: Rudy Izzard is a congressional candidate, not a member of Congress. Thus, he does not have a seat on any congressional committee.

A valuable day

I was fortunate enough to be one of the educators at the Newspapers in Education workshop at the Grace Cultural Center June 19. Although there were more than 200 teachers participating, the day was so well organized that it was a very successful and valuable day for all.

Sherry Allen, the NIE manager, is to be congratulated on her energetic manner and gracious hospitality. I received many tips on using the newspaper as a textbook.

Thanks again for your support of Big Country education.
