How many miles?

Just to let you and Charles Stenholm know that there are not two miles between South 14th/Highway 277 and Southwest Drive. I have checked it several times. It is barely one mile.

Mr. Stenholm speaks of widening of this length of freeway costing $10 million. Inasmuch as one can assume that his figure was based on two miles, and inasmuch as it is only one mile, where does the other $5 million go, Mr. Stenholm?

No doubt that leftover sum is some of the pork we hear so much about.

On an unrelated matter - Bill Whitaker, get a life, will you? I thought the Abilene Repeater-News had already run the story of King David's resignation as king of Israel.

One would get that impression, at any rate. This early talk about a search for the new superintendent confuses me. Wouldn't David Polnick be an excellent choice? Of course not. He is local and that would never do.

No prophet is without honor, save in his own country. I am persuaded that Mr. Hundley can be replaced locally by several good people. And believe it or not, when he leaves his job, the AISD will still be here as always.

Mr. Whitaker and others to the contrary notwithstanding, he is not irreplaceable nor indispensable.

Now that all we minions out here in Ignoranceland have been told twice about Hundley's upcoming resignation, leave it alone, eh?

The size of Texas

We are writing to inform you of an error you made in Bob Lapham's review of "Armageddon."

Truman (Billy Bob Thornton) did in fact say that the asteroid was the "size of Texas" in the film, as well as the previews. We both remember hearing this phrase very distinctly.

The rest of Lapham's review was a fairly accurate depiction of the movie. We also found the dialogue hard to follow due to the excessive background noise. Overall it was a great review.

The Clinton bunch

I saw Mr. Stenholm and his take on veterans in your paper. Maybe so, but why doesn't he understand that the Clinton bunch doesn't know how to or doesn't care for our men and women in the armed forces.

Some sex barriers might work for people with the values of Bill and Hillary. But for normal kids they are a disaster, especially first-time-away-from-home kids. How many young lives has this silly notion cost? Women in combat is foolish at best and is out of line.

Who ever thought of gays in high security responsible situations is the smart way to go?

Much-needed aid

Friday night, June 26, between Rising Star and Comanche, my husband and I had tried in vain for over an hour to change a blown-out tire on our heavily loaded pickup when a young man passed, turned around and came back to help.

With his friendly assistance and a big floor jack, he had the tire changed in a few minutes.

He would not accept money. He said, "It was my pleasure."

His name is Jared Harris from Cross Plains. We would like to tell his parents how friendly and polite their son was to us.

Jared could not have known about my husband's health problems and how badly we needed help that night.

We thank you, Jared, from the bottom of our hearts. May God bless you.
