Keep our promises?

Pay U.N. dues to keep promises (editorial, Sept. 26)? We promised to pay back dues if our man Annan was made the secretary-general, then we reneged? Where have you been? We, the people, can't remember the last time we weren't lied to. It sure wasn't during the last 30 years of elections. All these lies, and now they are coming from Congress, too!

I can't believe anybody would believe anything anybody from the U.S.A. would say anymore. Just look at the precedent we have set.

Our elected officials will tell anybody anything they want to hear to get elected, then do whatever Big Money dictates. Every election we hear Social Security reform but nothing meaningful gets done, unless you consider moving the eligibility age to 70 meaningful. With HMOs, who is ever going to live to see 70? Oh, I guess that was the point all along. Never mind.

I, for one - and I must be the only one - am sick of Democrats vs. Republicans and everybody losing. Somebody, somewhere must have an answer. We're waiting.

Look at alternative

Now that the Internet and the news media have made pornography readily available to us, I feel the remaining "zillion" pages of the Starr Report should be printed on our soft, fluffy toilet tissue. This would insure our "right to know" be available for easy reading in our favorite rest stations.

Remember when the news media actually searched out news stories and were critical of tabloid journalism? Also, do you remember when the "good Christian/family values" groups encouraged us to boycott Walt Disney? Well, now they are all too busy ingesting every word of this hatchet man's pornographic report.

Some say it's not about sex. I agree. It is about politics and getting Bill Clinton out of office. The president's use of legal loopholes to defend himself is no worse than the Republicans' use of loopholes to throw him from office. I believe the Republican party's right-wing conservative branch would rather have Satan for president than to have in office a liberal Democrat with a high job approval rating.

Just be aware of our alternative. The right-wing and their puppets are there to gain control - not only control of our government but to become dictators over our lives, freedoms and religion. If they succeed, there are those seeking power and the presidency who would be far worse than Clinton. They may be someone with an agenda to lead America to its own version of the Taliban.

No reason to quit

An answer to some of the letters to the editor on Sept. 22:

Talking bad about anyone, especially our president, is as big a sin as the one you blame President Clinton for.

You, me or anyone can't play God and be judge and jury. That's what we have Congress for. It hurts me to hear people put blame on the president before they weigh the facts.

Look at all the good things he's done. Our country is better off than I've seen it in years.

What about Kenneth Starr? For four years and $40 million of taxpayer money he comes up with 32 boxes of trash that has nothing to do with being president and running the country.

In some countries if you would have talked about the head of the government, they would have shot you.

So God bless America and the freedom we want to keep. I think Clinton is doing a good job running the country, and there is no ground for impeachment or quitting. Keep up the good work.
