Letters to the Editor
Puffed-up Congress
I am nearly 70 years old. My ancestors were in this land 150 years prior to its being a Republic. They fought in the Dunmores War, Indian wars, Revolutionary War, War of 1812, Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, Korean War. My son was in Vietnam and Desert Storm and still serves his country well.
Does this Congress feel they can take away all that they fought so hard for, giving their lives when necessary. They are so out of touch with the American people.
There should not be hungry people in this country. There should not be people who have to choose between food, medical care, heat and shelter while this Congress puffs itself up with so-called indignation, having committed just as grievous things as they charge the president with.
This Congress has squandered away valuable time and continues to under the guise of its our constitutional duty.
Get off your big fat behinds and let the hot air out and get back to work. If thats not possible, get out of the way of progress and let those who are willing have room.

Praising Stenholm
Thanks, Charlie.
The past few weeks have yielded nothing out of the Democratic Party but lame excuses for President Clinton. No voice of reason was heard. Never, were the charges of impeachment addressed. Just the same senseless statements made over and over again by the same, apparently senseless people.
I wonder if the constituents of any of the Democrats on that committee hold any sincere pride for their representatives. I fail to see how a reasonable person could.
Rep. Charles Stenholm wont win much air time with the major networks. He wont win much support from many of his fellow Democrats. But he just won a lot of respect and support from a man who almost always marks the Republican box on his ballot.
Thanks, Charlie.

A boost to Abilene
Abilene hosted 11 football playoff games in 1998, the most in recent memory. Six were held at AISDs Shotwell Stadium and five at Wylie ISDs Bulldog Stadium. Approximately 42,000 people attended the 11 games.
The tremendous facilities and staff support provided by both the Abilene and Wylie ISDs was the main reason these games were held here. Both groups went above and beyond the call of duty to assist visiting teams and their fans.
Special thanks go to the administration and athletic directors staff of both Abilene and Wylie ISD, the maintenance and janitorial personnel, and the AISD food service and Wylie Band Boosters who operated the concession stands.
The businesses in the community are the beneficiaries because estimates of expenditures per person for playoff games are approximately $15, making the total inflow to the Abilene economy in excess of $630,000.
Trophies for the games were provided by the Abilene Restaurant Association, Mall of Abilene, Civic Center, Abilene Convention and Visitors Bureau, Abilene Chamber of Commerce and Abilene Education Council. Abilene Athletic Supply was the trophy supplier.
During the games the Abilene Education Council sold T-shirts and programs for each game as a fund-raiser for the councils education programs. Participating in the production of these items were Ts-2-Please and Conley Printing.
Thanks to all of these groups for making these games possible.
