Tobacco money

How can Taylor County justify spending $263,000 of the monies received from the Texas tobacco lawsuit on a phone system and computers?

The right thing to do with the money is a no-brainer. The money should be put into a trust fund and spent on indigent health care. Wasn’t the purpose of the lawsuit to reimburse the counties and the state for money spent on tobacco related health care?

Is this a prime example that illustrates the need for lawsuit reform? Yes!

Friends in Coleman

I would like to publicly and personally thank Chick-Fil-A and their manager at the Mall of Abilene, Mr. Will Rogers.

Each year, the first-grade class at Coleman Elementary has a cupcake sale to raise their own money to attend a Christmas play and eat lunch in Abilene. During the last several years, they have purchased their noon meal at Chick-Fil-A.

The cupcake sale does not always raise a lot of money. However, it seems that no matter how much money is left over after they purchase their play tickets, it is just enough to buy lunch for the entire first-grade class.

Additionally, Will Rogers has secured sites for the students to eat and when the weather is nice delivers the meals to the park.

Will Rogers is truly an ambassador of good will for the Mall of Abilene and the city of Abilene.

To change slightly a quote from Mr. Rogers’ namesake: By his action, one must assume that Will Rogers “has never met a youngster he didn’t like.”

Angel named Misty

You have an angel in your city, and her name is Misty. On the morning of Dec. 12, my friend, Marge, and I were in Abilene to attend a basketball tournament. We went to the cafe to get something to eat, and a kind lady told us our tire was flat.

We felt like we could make it to a service station. When we got there, about 6:30 a.m., we could not find a mechanic or anyone to change our tire or repair it. We were bemoaning our fate when Misty walked in.

She offered to change our tire. When she looked at it, she said she could put air in it and see what happened. After putting air in our tire, she offered to have us follow her to a tire repair shop. She even went in to see what time they opened and to be sure they could take care of us.

I am sorry to say in all my confusion, I did not get her full name and address. However, I want her know how much I appreciate her help and concern.

Misty, we are grateful to you. May you have a happy holiday season!

The HSU what?

In regard to the recent resolution by the General Conference of the United Methodist Church that resulted in changing Oklahoma City University’s logo and abandoning the name “Chiefs,” I submit the following for consideration:

-- Cooper Cougars: Change to Cooper Latin-American Pumas.

-- Abilene Eagles: Change to Abilene National Emblems.

-- Wylie Bulldogs: Change to Wylie Male Bovine-Canines.

-- McMurry Indians: Change to McMurry Native American Methodist Researchers.

-- Abilene Christian University Wildcats: Change to Abilene Christian Feral Felines.

-- Hardin-Simmons University Cowboys: Change to Hardin-Simmons Ranch Technicians.

Surely these changes would be more “politically correct.”
