Letters to the Editor

Guardian angels

On Saturday, Dec. 19, our granddaughter was traveling from Lubbock to Abilene. At midnight, on the outskirts of Sweetwater, one of the most dreaded things happened to her — her pickup simply stopped running.

She managed to get the vehicle off the road and started walking toward Sweetwater — in the darkness of midnight, in the misty fog and in the cold, penetrating wind.

She finally came to a house. Even though she was apprehensive about who and what she would find there, she knew she had to ask for help. So, with a prayer in her heart, she knocked on the door.

Prayers are really answered because this was the house of Debra and Calvin Steward. They warmed her, nurtured her, helped her get in touch with us, managed to get her truck off of the highway and kept her safe until we got there.

So we want to say thank you to a couple of Guardian Angels named Debra and Calvin. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Proud to hunt

In response to Mr. Merrick’s Dec. 21 letter, let me just say, Find something better to do with your time!

Fathers have taken their children hunting for centuries. My father took my brother and me to the woods early in life, first for recreation, then for gun safety and finally for hunting. We were taught to eat what we kill, and that we do.

I have never considered using my guns on a school, post office or any other place, for that matter. Maybe that has something to do with the way my father raised me.

Mr. Merrick, maybe you could protest parents who don’t do enough with and for their kids instead of attacking a tradition that sound families have and will continue to participate in.

Gun safety is nothing more that being safe, smart and loving your children enough to teach them right from wrong. There again, maybe your protest should be aimed at the parents who try to discipline their kids at the teen-age level when, in fact, it should be done early in life.

Killing animals, for example the whitetail deer, actually saves them from agonizing starvation, as they are densely over-populated. Disciplining children is not child abuse either, it’s called “tough love.” To say that hunting is “destructive, and morally and ethically wrong” is unresearched and ignorant.

I am extremely proud of my country and my right to keep and bear arms. And yes, I will continue to hunt.

Get real, Charlie

I saw Charlie Stenholm on KTXS. He said Newt Gingrich was the problem in Washington and responsible for the hate in our government.

How can an honest, smart-as-a-whip man come to that conclusion? Bill Clinton has pulled the “Slick Willie” on more than 90 percent of the Democrats. Says he can’t remember on all of his grand jury testimony. He can’t recall ever being alone with Monica and all that phony, lying BS.

Does he think Newt should swallow that like a good Democrat and accept Clinton at his word? The Democrats were in charge of the House for 40 years, stealing at will, and none of them ever were questioned for it.

Get real, Charlie. Some of us ain’t brain dead yet.

Found his legacy

I know Mr. Clinton has been searching for his legacy. Now he has found it: Impeachment! Of course, since he has had problems with the definition of “is,” I wonder if he knows the definition of impeachment.
