America stays put

Americans are settling down.

Where once the average American moved every five years, it's now every six years and three months.

And, says the Census Bureau, when we move, we don't move very far. Of the 42 million who moved in the year ending March 1997, two-thirds stayed in the same county and more than half of the rest stayed in the same state.

Back in the pioneer days, it was said our restless ancestors moved whenever there was another light in the valley.

Now, it seems, it takes another subdivision in the suburb to get us to pull up stakes.
