Beating the tax bite

With Congress having further complicated the tax code rather than simplifying it last year, accountants are sure to find themselves busier than usual during this time of tax return preparing.

But even if your finances aren't complex enough to be affected by the more arcane twists and turns of the new code, a personal accountant may be out of your price range.

So what's an honest taxpayer to do?

Never fear -- the IRS itself is offering free assistance and tax counseling to people all across the Big Country, including senior citizens and those who cannot speak English.

At many locations around Abilene and in 18 Big Country towns, help will be available via two free programs -- Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly -- throughout the tax season.

To find out more information about the nearest free tax help site and its hours of operation, call the VITA program at (214) 767-1428 or the TCE program toll free at 1-888-367-2277. Send a Letter to the Editor about This Story | Start or Join A Discussion about This Story
