Future of our water

When we turn on the tap, we take water for granted. And we can't afford to be so nonchalant any more.

The Texas Water Development Board is soon to name a powerful new panel to draw our water blueprint for the future, and it is crucially important to the future of the Big Country to secure adequate representation on the 11-member planning committee for the 250-mile-long region we're in.

Today is the deadline for nominations to be received in Austin, and members of the West Central Texas Municipal Water District board hope to seat at least three of these 13 nominees:

Fred Lee Hughes, Mike Morrison, Grady Barr and Doyle Nash of Abilene, A.V. Jones Jr. and Bob Green of Albany, Gary Ernest and Chaunce Thompson of Breckenridge, Jay Lawrence and Rick Rhodes of Sweetwater, Jerry Marshall of Rotan, David Perdue of Knox City and Earl Bradley of Eastland.

The Big Country deserves the strong advocacy these credible voices would bring to this panel. Otherwise, some day, we could find our water supply tapped out.
