Beech Party crowd offers volunteer labor
By LORETTA FULTON / Abilene Reporter-News
Nonprofit organizations and businesses are missing out on a
golden opportunity for free labor this summer by not responding
to an offer from the Beech Party crowd.
But it's not too late. On Sunday, a Summer Kick-Off Youth Rally
will be held at Play Faire Park, 2300 N. 2nd for all local and
area youth. It is sponsored by the churches that have a joint
youth organization known as the Beech Party because it originated
at St. Paul United Methodist Church on Beech Street.
In addition to food, music and speakers from 2-6 p.m., the
rally is an opportunity for local nonprofits and businesses to
have representatives put in a request for volunteer assistance
this summer.
"Any number of nonprofits could use good solid kids in
a number of ways," said Chris England, youth minister at
St. Paul.
England said so far no one has responded to the offer, but
anyone interested can come Sunday.
"If somebody wanted to, I'll make space," England
said. "I'll make it happen."
Youths will be available to assist in anyway needed during
the summer, he said.
"We've got good kids who are looking for things to do,"
he said.
Anyone business or nonprofit organization interested can either
have a representative show up Sunday or call England at 672-2977.
The rally will feature eight praise bands and five speakers
Ñ Anthony Williams, who started Midnight Basketball; Chuck
Rodgers, Young Life director; Mark Hewitt, with The Mission; Ken
Lain, owner of Power Shack; and Jamie Merrill, a local recording
artist.
The event is open to all youth.
"Come one, come all," England said. "The most
important thing is for them to look around and say, 'I'm not alone.'
