Baptist Association to put on benefit concert
By LORETTA FULTON / Abilene Reporter-News
Abilene Baptist Association is having a gospel concert Thursday
to kick off its Lawrence L. Trott Offering for Associational Missions.
The public is invited to the concert, which begins at 7 p.m.
at the Paramount Theater. Admission is free, but an offering will
be taken.
The association has set a $17,000 goal for this year's campaign,
which runs through August. Missions to benefit from the campaign
are Hope Camp, ABA Social Ministries, and Special Projects including
the new Hospitality House, a facility for relatives visiting inmates
at Abilene's two prisons.
The big gospel concert featuring top solos and ensembles from
ABA churches is the kick off event for this year's campaign.
"An offering will be taken there and information will
be distributed about the offering," said ABA member Betty
Burton.
The money will be divided among three groups: Hope Camp, $10,000;
ABA Social Ministries, $3,000; ABA Projects, $4,000, including
$1,000 for Hospitality House.
Hope Camp is a camp for disadvantaged children. Each school
counselor chooses students to attend the camp, held in the summer
at the Baptist encampment at Lueders.
"We invite them to the camp, and we pay their way,"
Burton said.
The offering to be taken at the concert is named for the late
Dr. Lawrence L. Trott, director of missions for the ABA from 1957-1964.
The current ABA office building at 1765 cedar is located on property
where Trott's home once stood.
A major aspect of the campaign is the prayer calendar for the
month of May. A special prayer request is named for each day of
the month.
