Moments of Grace
In one part of my home, the plumbing is in the attic. One hot
summer day it was necessary for me to get into the attic and make
a repair in the plumbing.
nowing it would be dark, I got out my trusty extension cord,
replaced the light bulb in it, and climbed into the attic.
At one point while making the repairs, I put the light down
on the insulation. Suddenly, I smelled smoke and realized the
bulb had ignited the insulation. I thought I had snuffed it out
in such a manner it would not re-ignite.
Just as I was about to turn and walk away, the new light bulb
burned out. AsI cursed the darkness, I looked down. There before
my eyes was the potential danger of the glowing ember in the insulation.
Suddenly, I began to believe coincidence could be a way for
God to speak to us.
Not long after that, I happened to purchase a book, <I>Small
Miracles: Extraordinary Coincidences From Everyday Life.<I>
In the introduction to the book is this quote: "Thousands
of years ago, God spoke to man through the sublime miracles he
performed on massive and grandiose scales. In modern times we
are bereft of that privilege. Today we wrestle with a hidden God,
a concealed God, a God who no longer parts seas, stops the sun,
or turns people into pillars of salt.
"Instead, we have coincidences -- smaller, more personal,
everyday miracles. For when a coincidence does take place, it
is nothing more and nothing less than God tapping us on the shoulder,
whispering, or at times even shouting: 'I'm here! I'm with you!'
"
Recently, there have been several coincidences that remind
me of the presence of God in my life. Now I thank God for the
beauty of such moments of grace in my life.
