HSU holds neighborhood outreach project
By LORETTA FULTON

A garage sale without the "sale" is taking place
at Hardin-Simmons University today, and only selected guests are
invited.
Those special guests are neighbors who live around the HSU
campus and received a flier inviting them.
"This is a first," said Palmer McCown, director of
religious activities at Hardin-Simmons. "It's going to be
a neat neighborhood outreach."
The project was the brainchild of HSU senior Jennifer Maxwell,
who along with her husband Aaron, coordinated the effort.
Jennifer was involved in a similar project with her home church,
Trinity Fellowship, in Amarillo.
"That's kind of where the idea came from," she said.
Hardin-Simmons students, faculty, and staff donated clothing
to the effort, and volunteers helped sort it into men's, women's,
and children's groups. From 10 a.m. to noon today, neighborhood
residents will come to Room 108 of the Moody Student Center to
select four items of clothing each.
If the project proves to be as successful as Maxwell envisions,
it will be expanded next year.
"We're starting small and if it's successful, next year
we'll make it even bigger," she said.
Maxwell is coordinator of the Upperclassmen Discipleship ministry
team at Hardin-Simmons. That group, plus the Evangelism team led
by Brandon Rogers and the Community Outreach team led by Kelli
Taliaferro worked together to make the project a success.
The groups were responsible for distributing fliers, setting
up collection boxes, sorting the clothing and manning the tables
today.
Judging from the reaction of everyone involved, Maxwell expects
the project to become an annual event at the university.
"I think they're liking the idea," Maxwell said.
