Moments of Grace
God establishes families
I was struck by a poll in the religion section (Feb. 7 issue)
that claimed about 50 percent of Americans believe it is at least
somewhat better to conceive and give birth to their own children
as opposed to adoption.
From my perspective, adoption has been nothing but a true blessing
from God and several moments of grace.
That's because just more than 30 years ago my parents brought
me to their home, and more importantly, to their hearts.
And although I was a little put off that some people believe
family can only mean flesh and blood, I know God puts no restrictions
on love.
That first moment of grace was profound. In my earliest memory
I knew I was adopted, but more importantly, I knew I was loved.
It really didn't matter I was adopted or that my mother, through
no fault of her own, could not conceive or carry a child. All
that mattered was that I was wanted and cherished by two people
who so desperately wanted children.
Subsequent moments of grace have followed.
While growing up classmates and friends would ask innocently,
"Do you know your real parents?"
God allowed me to answer assuredly and without reservation,
"Yes, I'm living with my real parents. I've always known
my parents."
You see, I don't believe God makes a distinction between children
who are raised by their birth parents and those of us who are
adopted.
My sister once asked when we were younger, "Do you ever
feel different because we're adopted?"
Surely her question was prompted by her peers, who like my
friends were curious about our adoption status.
But by God's grace, my answer was quick and without hesistation.
"I don't feel different because we're adopted. I just
feel special."
