Rally for Catholic youth expected to draw large
group
By LORETTA FULTON / Abilene Reporter-News
A youth rally that is expected to draw as many as 500 youngsters
to Abilene will be held Feb. 7 at Holy Family Catholic Church,
5410 Buffalo Gap Rd.
Last year more than 400 youths from Catholic churches in Abilene
and surrounding communities attended the event, said Penny Pope,
coordinator.
The rally is for Catholic youths from the Big Country who are
in grades 9-12. Pope said the rally was started several years
ago after a local group attended a similar rally in San Antonio
and recommended it to the former priest at Holy Family.
"We were so inspired by it," Pope said, and a similar
rally was planned for the Abilene Deanery of the San Angelo Diocese.
Activities will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 11 p.m. Cost
is $12. Highlights will include a talk by Abilene school Superintendent
Charles Hundley at 10:30 a.m. and a presentation by a college
group, Voices Unmasked, at 11.
The Most Rev. Michael D. Pfeifer, bishop of the diocese, will
celebrate the Holy Eucharist at 5 p.m.
A spaghetti dinner, prepared by men of the Knights of Columbus,
will be served and a dance will conclude the day's activities.
During the day, youth missionaries will conduct workshops focusing
on youth ministry, and a report will be prepared for the bishop.
"We'll give them a voice," she said.
In addition to the Knights of Columbus, Pope is being assisted
by her husband, Howard, and Cathy Hennessey of Holy Family, Wanda
and Tony Gutierrez of St. Vincent Palloti, and Father David Matz
of St. Francis, as well as numerous other volunteers.
"I have a lot of help," Pope said.
