University Church of Christ plans Family Emphasis
Month
By LORETTA FULTON

When a well-respected professional in the congregation suggests
a program for the church, the minister had best listen.
Or at least that was the thinking when Eddie Sharp, minister
of University Church of Christ the past 18 years, began Family
Emphasis Month at the church in September 1996.
The popular series resumes Wednesday and runs through Sept.
27 with various programs scheduled.
The idea came from church member Dr. Carl Brecheen, who specializes
in marriage and family studies at Abilene Christian University
and is director of the school's Bible Teachers Workshop.
Brecheen also teams with Paul Faulkner of Austin, formerly
at ACU, to conduct seminars nationwide.
"When you have a resource like that in your congregation
who's gone two Sundays out of the month doing seminars, it makes
you think you ought to pay attention," Sharp said.
So for the third year Sharp is paying attention. This year
the family month programs will be under the auspices of the women
of University Church, headed by Brecheen's wife, Smitty.
"His wife was the driving force that said, 'let the women's
ministry do this,' " Sharp said.
Wednesday's sessions will begin at 7 p.m. Tom and Sandy Milholland
will lead a workshop on "Refreshing the LOVE in Your Marriage"
and Jeff Childers will lead the session on "A Pure Heart
and a Clear Vision."
Sharp said Family Emphasis Month traditionally draws a number
of visitors to the church.
"We think it helps us," he said.
