Strike appears likely, Eagle spokesman says

Present indicators still point toward a Friday night airline strike by American Airlines, an Abilene spokesman said Wednesday.

"I firmly look for it to occur," said Alan Hicks, local community representative for American Eagle/Simmons Airlines.

And in that event, the American system will shut down, including American Eagle, Hicks said.

Parent company AMR Inc. will place everybody on emergency furlough, closing down the entire system along with its support categories, he said.

The local time that is scheduled to occur is 11 p.m. Friday, according to Hicks.

The American Eagle system has 9,000 employees nationwide, including 16 workers in Abilene, Hicks said.

"Four American Eagle companies are affected," he said.

For passengers holding tickets or reservations, Hicks suggested calling toll free (800)433-7300 to see what options are available.
