10 banks back Hamlin bid with $10 million
HAMLIN -- Ten area banks have agreed to commit $10 million
for affordable housing and loans for a regional youth detention
facility in Hamlin.
Officials of banks in four counties -- Fisher, Haskell, Jones
and Stonewall -- made the joint agreement Tuesday at Hamlin National.
They said the key to the agreement is a provision to fund loans
as low as $3,000.
"This lower loan amount should enable many prospective
employees to purchase existing homes that could use some renovation
and end up with an affordable monthly payment," said Rotan
banker Robert Posey.
Anson banker Keith Gilbert said, "All of our towns will
benefit from this facility and the amount of potential home financing
necessitates this kind of commitment."
Hamlin is seeking to land a $19.5 million facility from the
Texas Youth Commission in Austin. It would provide about 600 jobs
and an estimated annual payroll of $20 million.
The 330-bed center would house juvenile offenders ranging in
ages from 10 to 17.
West Texas towns in four counties have agreed to work together
with Hamlin on the bid package.
Participating area banks are: First National, Anson; First
National, Aspermont; Hamlin National; First American Bank Texas,
Haskell; First National, Haskell; Haskell National; First National,
Sweetwater/Roby; First National, Rotan; First State, Stamford;
and Home State, Rochester/Stamford.
