Sonic stock falls

Sonic Corp. stock tumbled 35 percent Monday after the drive-in restaurant owner and franchiser said it expects second-quarter earnings to be below Wall Street's expectations.

Sonic, based in Oklahoma City, blamed delays in opening new drive-ins. The company also said existing drive-ins in new markets are taking longer than forecast to reach sales and profit goals.

Sonic said it expects earnings for the three months ended Feb. 28 to be 10 percent higher than the 21 cents a share posted a year ago, which would be about 23 cents a share. Sonic's net income in the year-ago period was $2.8 million on revenue of $30.8 million.

Analysts surveyed by First Call Inc. had forecast earnings of about 27 cents a share for the most recent period.

Sonic stock fell $7.12-1/2 to close at $13.12-1/2 a share on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
