Fiesta Foods to close Butternut store

By BOB BRUCE

Senior Staff Writer

The Fiesta Foods store at 1290 Butternut will close Saturday, spokesman Jay Lawrence of Sweetwater said Monday.

Lawrence said the supermarket, purchased six years ago from M System, will be closed at the end of the business day Saturday.

The store is part of MAL Enterprises, which operates 21 stores in West Texas under the name of Fiesta Foods and Lawrence Brothers.

The closure will leave the chain with two Fiesta Food stores in Abilene at South 3rd and Sayles and at Pine and Ambler.

Lawrence said the operations of the Butternut store would be combined with the Sayles store. He indicated that the stores were located too close to each other.

Twenty people are employed at the Butternut location, said Lawrence, who is chief operating officer for the chain.

"Our effort is to place everyone in some capacity" in other stores, Lawrence said. "Some may not accept our offer but a lot will."

Among those staying with the company is Butternut manager Billy Martin who will be reassigned to the Ambler and Pine store, Lawrence said.

The chain, headquartered in Sweetwater, has about 600 employees in nine or 10 West Texas communities, according to Lawrence. The company was formed in 1929 by Lawrence's grandfather, the late J.M. Lawrence.
